A very well written mystery that explores the inner world of its heroine very convincingly.

I liked the well researched police procedural aspect as well as the sense of place. The writers transports you to the rainy, green Navarre forests and explores the rich folklore of the area. The murder plot is well paced and utilises its red herrings well. I couldn’t pick the murderer till the very end. Not sure I was totally into the idea that the folkloric elements had a reality though it leaves open the possibility that this is in the heroine’s mind.

Inspector Salazar is an excellent detective admired by most of her peers but plagued by her past. The plot is more compelling than gripping which moves you in your compulsion to finish the novel.Salazar seems to have infinite patience and the reader could have cheerfully committed some murders of their own. The realms of fantasy were sometimes out of reach but the hunt for the killer is realistic and follows good police procedure. An OK read which I found required endurance though some of our book club members skipped through it.

Unusual

The Invisible Guardian is just the kind of novel I like being a police procedural set in a location I know nothing about so it will be no surprise that I enjoyed it with a few reservations.
Amaia Salazar is a hot shot detective inspector based in Pamplona. She comes from Elizondo, a small, historic town in the Basque region and returns home to head up the investigation into a serial killer who is abducting young women, strangling them and posing the bodies. It is a difficult investigation with few clues, made worse by Amaia having to deal with a jealous colleague and the family problems which have kept her away from Elizondo for many years.
Ms Redondo packs a lot into her novel, not just the case and the personal problems but Basque legend, the history of Elizondo and the supernatural. I found the Basque detail fascinating and informative and the history and descriptions of Elizondo extremely atmospheric. They make me want to visit. The supernatural thing, mostly a Bigfoot type creature in the woods and a fertility goddess, don't add anything to the investigation but do add a mystical quality to an already well described location and atmosphere. It is reminiscent of Michael Marshall's Straw Men creatures.
Amaia is a strong woman with secrets from her past which are gradually revealed as the novel progresses. She is, however, the only well drawn character with rest being rather stereotypical - James, the perfect husband, good in bed and a paragon of understanding outside it, Flora, the mean sister martyring herself on the pyre of family obligation and completely OTT, the weak brothers-in-law etc. Does it really matter when the novel is plot driven? I don't think so.
The Invisible Guardian is a good, if a bit bumpy, start to a new series and I have no hesitation in recommending it anyone looking for something a bit different.

Could have been better

I had heard about the books as they are very popular in Spain and was curious about a story set in Navarra with mythological elements. The story is entertaining enough and the main character interesting. However the translation is quite poor (disgustado in Spanish means upset not disgusted!) and there are unnecesary long explanations of locations with street names included. I learned a bit about Basque mythology so I guess that's what I got out of it. Not planning on reading the other two books as life is too short.

Enjoyed

Interesting main character and plot. I liked how the location became a character in its own right, fleshed out in the supernatural characters. However, I thought the family were so thinly drawn it was distracting. The eldest sister was so over the top horrible I couldn’t understand why anyone in her family even spoke to her, sister or not I would have punched her. And her husband was so perfect.. I rolled my eyes a few times. That whole bit about a woman not being complete without children left me cold too. Maybe that is a Spanish thing, I noticed the same theme in her previous book as well, but it was more subtle and less obnoxious. The story kept me guessing and I liked the supernatural part. Enjoyed it but not as much as “All this i give to you.”

An excellent murder mystery set in the Basque Country

I had already read the second book of the trilogy the legacy of the bones, so reading this filled in the
gaps in the story. These are excellent books, hard to put down, written with skill. Dolores Redondo is
a brilliant author and I'm looking forward to reading the third book in the trilogy, and seeing the film
The invisible guardian.

One of the best 'murder mysteries' I have read. It really does keep you guessing who the perpetrator is ( though you might develop suspicions, which is how it should work in my opinion) until the end. The background story is absorbing and well written. Thoroughly recommended. Looking forward to the film if it goes ahead.
