5.0 out of 5 starsAwesome unit, step up from smaller Show 5

I imported 2x Echo Show 8's from UK. They are awesome displays for family photos, audio is x10 better and are otherwise identical to the smaller Show5's. Yes, the clock display cant be set to full screen. Minor grumble.
A very welcome addition to the Echo family for Australian users!
We love our kitchen companion Echo Show. We use it all the time for ordering from Amazon, playing music, checking the weather, looking up recipes and controlling our smart devices. We especially love the ability to have it constantly cycle through our family photos as a slideshow which is always bringing back great memories and a focal point for family to remember events.
Features we love: - Ordering via Amazon is easy as, gives a few popular choices for products. Can buy or add to your cart for later. - Playing music easy as just asking "Alexa play music" or asking for a previous station or playlist is easy. - Easy to look up our favourite recipes and have on hand. - Provides slider control for controlling smart devices like light bulbs.
Some improvements are needed though: - You can add items to your cart, but then can't remove them in anyway I can find. There is no way to access via touch and asking Alexa "remove paper towel from cart" "clear cart" "delete from cart" all just gives "hmmm I don't know that". - STILL no parental controls at all with Amazon Music via Echo devices. Not even explicit music filter. Your kid gets misheard and suddenly mature music or even video playing.
But comparing devices and coming from the original Show Gen 1 this is a great upgrade we are loving so far!
I have seen many reviews on this and each to their own. I haven’t owned a show 5 so I can’t mention the issue with the customisation of the home screen. This is what I know. I have had it for a couple of weeks. The sound is okay, not jaw dropping. The screen is clear and the bright. The ability to call works well and Alexa seems to work well also. Sometimes the volume peaks when you ask Alexa to do something. The volume button plays up when shifting the volume up and down just after requesting a song to be play. The scrolling screen is a bit of a gimmick. Other then that it’s a cracker of a device. I have it in the kitchen and it does what I need it to do. Clock size isn’t an issue and I am guessing with updates it will get better. Great unit at the introduction offer pricing.
This is the perfect size for the kitchen and fits next to a competitors device, very responsive in the kitchen on an island bench when in front of the unit and even from the rear when in the living area. In terms of sound it is very good for the space and as it is added with accompanying Sony Sound bar in the living area the sound can be lower and still be good for the room space (an apartment open living). Only thing i would note is I purchased without the stand originally, however i was concerned liquid may spill on it, so i did purchase of the accompanying stand.
I have an Echo Show 5 and an Echo Show 8. The 5 displays the date but the 8 does not. The idea of a device on the kitchen bench that is all-encompassing is desirable and the Echo Shows do that for the most part but the absence of the date on the 8’s display is bewildering.
To continue the feedback theme, both devices go into sleep mode automatically at night, but if you display a slideshow of photos from Amazon Photos during the day, there does not appear to be a way of customising the font size and colour of the time display in sleep mode. The time on my 5 beside my bed was a difficult-to-read small dull red. I don’t wear classes in bed so the display should not be odd, dull colours because I have an Amazon Photos slideshow
This Amazon Echo Show 8 is just the right size. I have it on the bench in the kitchen and it provides excellent viewing for recipes and allows me to catch up on news items from around Australia while I am cooking.
I wanted to love the Echo Show 8 but the design flaw on the microphone to pick-up my commands is just frustrating. My other Echo devices in my kitchen (Echo Spot) and living room (Echo Input) able to pick my commands even when I am closer to Echo Show 8. I have to changed wake up commands for Spot and Input as I have to raise my voice to make sure the Show 8 able to listen to my commands.
Its my favourite digital helper speaker with a screen added. For me there's not much to dislike. Seems like a solid device. Good sound quality and a nice screen. Seems almost perfectly suited to a kitchen setting. But would do well anywhere too. Will be enjoying the news and youtube hands free while eating breakfast.
I upgraded an existing echo show 5 to the new model because the screen is easier to read in places like the kitchen when you want to follow recipes etc. Great product - especially if you can get it at an amazon promo price.
