- Customer Reviews:
'A young girl growing into adolescence confronts family abuse and a dark past in this lyrical debut novel. Cantrell's exquisitely written story immerses readers in a world that is as cruel as it is beautiful. From the opening lines to the very last sentence, the book's magnetic prose bewitches and enthralls on every page. A visceral and gripping journey of a young woman's revelations about God and self, this novel will surely excite any reader who appreciates a compelling story about personal struggle and spiritual resilience.'--Publishers Weekly

a fascinating readReviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 August 2014
A bit slow to start but then it was hard to put down. Interesting twists and turns invite the reader to reflect on their own responses to situations and circumstances that often have no definitive answer.

I enjoyed the book very much. It is the first time I've read this author and will plan to read more of her books.
Not very mind grippingReviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 August 2013
I'm sorry that I cannot agree with the other reviews as I found this story boring to the extreem!! It came up in my list for historiacal romances for my kindle but I'm afraid it wasn't my sort of thing. The amount that I read was boring so I didn't bother after a while. This is most unusual for me, but it just wasn't inspirational.

Will read the sequelReviewed in the United States on 14 February 2020
I enjoyed this book and will definitely read the sequel. I would caution that it has mature content, which though awful, it is real life. Spoiler alert ahead!!! There is domestic violence, substance abuse, and rape, however, the author is absolutely careful to present these atrocities without bad language or in graphic detail. I read the entire book and am giving it as a gift to my 17 year old granddaughter who is interested in psychology. I would not give it to my younger granddaughters, just because of the subject matter. I will check out more of Julie Cantrell's books!
