Alyssa has been caring for her fathers house while he has been in London wasting his money away and auctioning his house off to Morgan. Then he dies and Alyssa is left having to pay off his debts. Morgan is the one to tell her of his purchase of her fathers house. Basically she is left homeless and without a job. Morgan is kind to her and helps her get on her feet. He offers to protect her and she misunderstands his proposition! Meantime he is suspected of treason and must work with the government to discover the true spy. The plot of this is good, many plots, very active and interesting. Paced superbly and all bases covered by this author. She is new to me. I would recommend her for future reads!
I feel like I am sitting on the fence while reviewing this book, I could jump on either side of liking it or maybe being disappointed in it.
My problem with the story was that I never once felt engaged by the characters. The writer gave plausible reasons for the personalities of both the hero and heroine yet I barely liked or cared about either.
I confess to skimming the book in parts, which attests to my lack of interest. The whole book was entirely predictable. The author did have a good, if hackneyed plot, but the character development didn't work for me. The hero was, well... a slow learner and just not that likable to me, he seem selfish, and amazingly self-centered. The heroine.....I don't know, can't really explain it,if she had died in childbirth and the hero had to grow up and move on once again, it might have made a better book.
After re-reading that last paragraph, I realize...nope, I didn't like this book. It was not awful, and for the price just barely ok for my personal tastes. I am the lone dissenter at the time I did this review and you of course must decide for yourself, just not a great read for me.
Lady Alyssa is a hardworking no-nonsense noblewoman. Her wastrel father has her selling off all kinds of treasures from her beloved estate to pay his gambling debts, so when the Duke of Gillingham, Lord Morgan shows up at her country estate, of course, she believes he is there to settle an IOU.
She is surprised to discover that her father has sold her home out from under her to Morgan. Not too worry, she has money set aside to live in a small cottage but even that is taken from her to pay her father's debts. When Morgan hears of Alyssa's dilemma he is appalled and decides to employ her as the steward of the house until his brother and his wife take residence. Alyssa gladly accepts this job.
There is a powerful attraction between self-reliant Alyssa and Morgan. She erroneously believes though that he loves her and wants to marry her but Morgan is of the ilk that marriage is not for him and proposes to set her up as a mistress. Alyssa flatly refuses this offer, she is honorable.
Interwoven into this story is Morgan's search for British traitors. He does not reveal this to Alyssa and she is actually unaware of his clandestine dealings until almost the end of the book.
Both the leads acted reasonably and more importantly they never let a lot of misunderstandings get in the way of their romance. How refreshing for people to forgive each other quickly and for them to say those important words, "I am sorry." Even though Alyssa is very independently minded she is not immovably stubborn. She thinks through her situations logically and has the sensibilities of a woman living in the 19th century This is one of Ms. Basso's best.
Well written story of love and intrigue. Characters are written to engage the reader in their lives. You are drawn into their lives like they are relatives and you are anxious for the outcome of the story. The plot, although it has been done many times, is so well written that you are holding your breath for the end of the story. Truly enjoyed this book. A romance reader's joy.
I throughly enjoyed this book. It has a good story line the characters are strong & it has a sense of humor. The only draw back for me was it was too sexual, but I skipped those pages, to enjoy the test of the book.
This was a well-written, spellbinding adventure. I liked the writing style, pace, and historical setting. The characters were likable, people that seemed one would want to spend time with. Great author!
The duke comes to the rescue...sort of. He is offering for her to become his mistress she thinks he offers marriage. Along with the improbable romance the couple must find who is selling secrets to France and implicating the duke.
