Insolent is the felicitous end to what has been another stellar series from TL Smith.
It fits that Darby, the charismatic, mysterious and obstinate leader of the Crimson Elite, be the one to take us out in an action, emotion and surprise packed finale.
It's drama straight out of the gate and keep the tissues handy as Darby, the most evidently emotionally disconnected of these staunch men becomes a Dad! And that is not the least of it!
This is not an entirely happy occasion, though he surprises even himself as his locked tight heart starts to crack with the adorable new addition to the Elite family.
Then, enter new employee Olympia, who rubs this man immediately up the wrong way and the friction only causes some very hot sparks to fly.
The connection between these two is as much volatile as it is necessary for both of them in different ways. For she, like Darby, is also a mirage of toughness and determination with a tender damaged core; who's past, when it comes back to claim her, has the potential to destroy not only her fragile heart but the budding future she and Darby are only beginning to see as a possibility.
The interactions between the other Elite men and their women colours this story well, and though this is a great conclusion to this series, I felt at times it was a bit rushed and there was a lot left uncovered or expanded upon.
But this does by no means make this a sub standard read. It's still well and truly a worthy 4 stars.
