Beginning with a short view of a 10-year-old's life in a violent school system and a compulsion to sketch things she sees in person and in others minds. This is followed by an abrupt break to her activities as a young enforcer detective working to solve crime using her sketching talents. Her identification and prosecutÃon of a violent and ruthless drug kingpin leads to evidence and witnesses destroyed and suborned, her own life nearly ended but the kingpin convicted and sentenced. After recuperating in hospital for 5 months, she returns to duty to find that no-one will partner her and that she is being transferred far away to avoid attracting violent payback by the drug cartel.
This is a well-written and engaging story outlining a highly stratified remnant society where rampant corruption is hinted at and at least one ruthless crime gang is able to murder unpunished. The abrupt shift from child to adult is a little off-putting and her lack of support from her colleagues at the end leaves the reader sharing her disappointment.
