Product description

Product Description

In a blend of cosmic horror with weird science fiction and action spy adventure, the Harrison Peel Files recounts the adventures of former Army Intelligence Officer turned NSA consultant who travels the globe fighting the good fight against alien monsters wherever they appear threatening to destroy humanity. The series is set in the worlds of H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos and the fourth collection features two short stories and one novella set against the backdrop of the War on Terror, the Space Program and radio astronomy.
The Road to Afghanistan — Peel contacts an assassin embroiled in a conspiracy festering at the very heart of the Pentagon, one involving alien creatures pulled from another dimension and released into Taliban controlled territory.
War Gods of Men — in Afghanistan a new super-weapon is decimating soldiers on the battlefronts, so Peel teams up with cyber-analyst Sergeant Emerson Ash and leads a search and destroy mission inside the enemy heartland.
The Eye of Infinity — an astrophysicist is found dead at a radio telescope facility in New Mexico with a condition called multiple eye syndrome, and Peel’s investigation leads him to NASA and a conspiracy at the heart of the very universe itself.

Always excellent. A fresh perspective on the Mythos in the vein of Delta Green and others.

I've long been a fan of Conyers' "Harrison Peel" series of novels and Lovecraftian stories.

"The Infinity Agenda" by David Conyers is book four in the continuing series of Harrison Peel adventures as he battles against eldritch horrors, human antagonists and shadowy organisations. In here are two wicked short stories, "The Road to Afghanistan" and "War Gods of Men" plus the excellent novella "The Eye of Infinity".

So, how to describe this to the uninitiated? Exciting, fast paced, horrifying are some of the words I would use when describing Harrison Peel stories but that would only you give a mere hint of the untrammelled joy that you get when reading these stories. Conyers takes ground trod by "Delta Green" but adds a much more expansive and global perspective to his stories. The wars fought here have a shadowy element to them but it is more focused on an action and thriller style of narrative. Add to this an underlying theme of real world theoretical science applied to explaining Lovecraft's creations and universe and you get a much more satisfying set up.

Opening story "The Road to Afghanistan" deals with Harrison as he encounters the Taliban who have acquired a unique weapon of mass destruction which they fully intend to use. However, as the story progresses, it becomes clear that there are other far more sinister forces at play behind the scenes. It is a lean and taut opening story that nicely segues into "War Gods of Men", Conyers collaboration with fellow Australian writer David Kernot. I always like these collaborations. They always have this solid real world feel about them even though they frequently deal with cosmic horrors. This story is no exception as Harrison Peel and Emerson Ash lead a joint operation to deal with insurgents and Yog-Sothoth. Excellent stuff!

However, both of these can be thought of the appetisers for the main feast which is "The Eye of Infinity" novella. This is on par with "The Spiralling Worm" for my favourite Peel Tale: covert government agencies, wormholes, alternate dimensions, Shoggoths, and Azathoth, what's not to like? The Eye of Infinity is a superb blend of spy thriller, science fiction and extra dimensional horror. It races along at a breakneck speed as it pits Harrison Peel against a government agency intent on studying the heart of the universe- The Eye of Infinity. To say more would be to spoil what is an absolute blast of a novella in a fantastic collection. Go on, you know you want to treat yourself!!

Elder Codex might not have stuck with me as much as the other books, but Infinity Agenda has to be, hands down, my FAVORITE book in the series. If you think that modern lovecraftian fiction is too mild and down to earth for your tastes, if you have grown up thinking that it's all about blasphemous rituals conducted in decrepit mansions in the middle of nowhere, then you should think again.

Infinity Agenda features dimension-hopping, government conspiracies, a secret plan to transmute mankind and a Shoggoth conspiracy that spans billenia. Oh and the nastiest, most imaginative rendition of Azathoth I've ever read. Highly recommended.

David Conyers has created a great series, a great character with his Harrison Peel Files. After reading a story here and there, I finally picked up all 5 books so I would have the complete collection. Well worth it and a must read for any who like this kind of fiction.
