Children under the age of four account for 25% of all child victims of substantiated maltreatment. Early relationships are essential to healthy development. The mental health needs of infants and toddlers who enter the foster care system are often neglected. Infants and toddlers are completely dependent on adults for their survival and well-being. It is crucial that professionals involved in their care be educated and sensitive to the unique developmental needs of this age group. This book will address the current research regarding infant brain development, effects of maltreatment on infants and toddlers, and attachment theory as it applies to infants and toddlers in foster care.

Great bite-sized introduction to the topic of infant attachment and foster care. A must read for social workers or foster parents of babies. I would love to see a longer version of this book with more detailed medical information, case studies, and best practices. As someone beginning the foster parent journey I am concerned to learn more about what types of placements I should accept and how to best care for infants.

This was a helpful read. But what now? It stressed the importance of the attachment but how does a foster parent go about this in difficult cases? I feel like I need more information about do’s and don’ts!
Brevity is a virtue.

This works as an introduction to specific considerations with foster placement, attachment, and general concerns. It is easy to follow, which makes it an ideal starting point for anyone. That this is fact-based with citations, and uses an objective perspective gives it a lot more credibility than other comparable information sources.

The role of foster parent to an infant and toddler is one of vital importance. Thanks for explaining how the case at this age really does matter
