Product Description

Aurore was delighted when a marriage was arranged with the boy she loved, her older brother’s friend Dominique, Comte de Bures. But in a few years the first rush of joy has worn off, and their promising life seems ruined by loss, betrayal, and misunderstanding.

One terrifying morning mercenaries overrun their château and usurpers take Aurore hostage. Miles away at Versailles, where he is required to dance attendance on Louis XIV, Dominique is nearly killed by a crossbow bolt.

Escaping, Aurore travels with a troupe of itinerant musicians, hiding in the open while discovering hidden resources within herself.

Dom sets out to find his wife. He needs his old life back. He needs revenge. But his lands, his title, and his honor mean nothing unless he can win back the love of his indispensable wife.

4.0 out of 5 stars It turns out Dom and Aurore were already sort of separated in spirit and not really feeling the love before the plot thickened 13 October 2015

In a classic case of not knowing what you've got until it's gone, hero Dominique and Aurore don't realize how indispenable each of them is to the other until they are parted when Aurore is taken hostage in a mercenary take-over of their chateau and Dom is nearly killed by an assasins arrow in the court of Louis XIV. As Dom recovers from his injuries, Aurore escapes her captors and goes on the run, hiding amongst an itinerant group of musicians performing throughout the French countryside. Amidst the political intrigue of the court, Dom must find his wife, unravel the plot against him and uncover the conspirators behind it, and take back his chateau, all before being arrested himself under suspicion of treason against his king.

Lodge has done an impressive job in bringing 17th century France to life from the lives of peasants to the king himself. From King Louis the XIV's court in Versailles, to the chateaus, to the countryside, it all rings true. As to the people populating her story, she has given the reader a lovely, if brokenhearted, damaged, stubborn, and angry, pair of lovers to root for. It turns out Dom and Aurore were already sort of separated in spirit and not really feeling the love before the plot thickened, so finding Aurore is just the beginning of getting her back. As for the surrounding cast of characters, they are fully fleshed out and real, with plights, sorrows, and joys the reader can relate to.

The Indispensable wife was a very enjoyable read. I definitely wanted to know how it all ended up. The court intrigue and the mystery surrounding the identities of the mercenaries who took the chateau kept me guessing. A scene in this book set the stage for the next book in the series, which focuses on one of Aurore's brothers and I'm looking forward to reading his story next.
5.0 out of 5 stars Not the run-of-the-mill romance 19 January 2017

I liked this book a lot. It's set in a time (late 17th century) and a place (France) not familiar to most American readers, and gives a strong sense of the period than is sometimes found in romantic (or even non-romantic) historical fiction. It's definitely not the standard romance--it's not all garden parties and good manners and will-the-heroine-get-the-man-of-her-dreams? I'll be ordering Lodge's other books.

I love historical fiction and this book held my interest through the characters while making me want to look up France in the 1600s. Love how Ms. Lodge grows Aurore and Dom as they strive to regain/reinvent their life together.
3.0 out of 5 stars Boring. 2 September 2016

It took me sometime to get into this book. I felt like there was something missing or that I had missed part of the story. Frankly, I was bored. I read two other books after I started this book and before I finished it. It didn't seem to flow smoothly.
5.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing tale of betrayal and romance 21 December 2015

I like that this story portrays a family on the outs with the court. It's suspenseful and entertaining and the love story is part of the plot.
