I've read all of Mitchell's work and this is definitely his most accomplished and well written. I think I enjoyed it as much as anything, maybe equal with Crucible of Souls.
It was immediately captivating and I found myself with the usual "just one more chapter" curse at 2am, knowing I had work the next day. He has taken his character development to the next level in this book as I felt a sense of attachment very early on. His writing of emotional and high-tension scenes in particular really drove a deep caring for his main characters.
The world is a familiar one, with his magic system (dawn and dusk-tide sorcery) now well established in previous books. However, he managed to add in some new and intriguing elements which we now eagerly await to fully understand as he reveals in future books.
As this is a 'coming-of-age' style story, there is more time spent on characters than on action, but there are still some very satisfying fights and 'trials', with one great battle in particular that has stuck in my memory.
I found this book extremely easy to read and cannot wait for book 2 in the series.
