Is it something they do a lot in Norway, or does the author just like winking, because at tines it happens 3 or 4 times in a single conversation?
A good read, interesting plot, however a bit overplayed on the "flawed but genius protagonist". Good enough to get me to try book two, just hope they stop winking ...

Way Too Much Repetition

As a rule I always enjoys "the Nordics" and this story was good as well BUT there's a lot of needless repetition which just seems to be filling. Maybe he had a wordcount to reach but for me I'd have preferred a shorter book instead.
One phrase in particular was repeated so often that I was going to pack it in but I'd already passed the 50% mark by then so I persevered. If I'd only got in as far as 20% or so, though, I'd have deleted it. It was with reference to Mia, the line about "she found a lozenge in her pocket." I kid you not, we probably had at least a dozen mentions of this. So irritating, I promise you. We also had too much winking (as mentioned by a prior reviewer) and too many people kept on having headaches. One line was repeated twice in the one passage, too-"Let's not waste time working out how much time has passed"....not sure why....more padding, I guess.
He went with American spellings which most of the Nordic translations seem to do. And he used a lot of M names-we have Miriam, Marianne, Marion, Mia....makes it bloody confusing in places.
I don't do drugs myself but I did like his description from a drug addict featured that one drug was akin to "little smiles in her bloodstream". When it's put like that it sounds sorely tempting !! I had a go at the little puzzle his pal sent him as well and I guessed 1 minute so I went the wrong way in my thinking. Hehehe....I smiled too at the oft-mentioned Farris water. That's included as often as the Swedish authors refer to IKEA in their books....
I did like Mia and Holger's relationship. They're very differing types of people but it works well, nonetheless. Although I wouldn't want to live inside her head.....she's got way too much going on in it. It would drive me round the twist. No wonder he's baffled by her thought processes at times. I was right there with him !! I liked Emilie and Tobias a great deal as well. Both great characters. Another big favourite was Gabriel. He's a smashing guy.
He repeatedly referred to doll's clothes instead of dolls' and got it wrong too with kid's and Ladies with his apostrophes. Then one minute Marion's doll Frankie Stein was female then male. He also wrote nettle and not mettle.
I see the follow-up story has also been translated now and I would like to know how the characters all fare but the repetition I can't bear to face again. I'll put it on my list but if someone refers to it happening again I won't bother buying it. A pity but it's far too distracting and annoying for me.

I enjoyed this and was keen to discover the perpetrator of the murders. The translation wasn't too bad but did anyone else get annoyed at how many times the characters winked at each other. I began to look for it in the end which was a distraction. My Kindle tells me someone winked 35 times in the book! perhaps winking is a Norwegian thing.

Holger Munch, the police investigator is in charge of reassembling his unit, but he needs his old partner Mia who is very troubled and is living on a solitary island with plans to kill herself.
Mia agrees to help with the case, planning on coming back to the island at a later date, and she finds something that nobody else has, a thin line carved into the girls fingernail which is the number 1. Mia then quickly works out that there will be more girls that will die and she must put her own demons to one side and help crack the case.

I have had this on my reading pile for ages and am now left wondering why I didn’t pick it up sooner. This was a truly great read.
The characters are very well developed. I especially really enjoyed learning about Mia and why she was so troubled. I liked all the other characters as well and they all worked well together really well. The book is a little slow to start with at the beginning but then suddenly it picks up pace and you find yourself racing along to get to the end.

I now have downloaded the second book by this author and am really looking forward to reading it.

My heart was in my mouth reading the last couple of chapters. Very well plotted, kept me guessing until the conclusion, well written, great characters. Like the team work and closeness of Munch's team. At first, I thought there were too many characters and names and individuals to follow but it all made sense and came together very well at the end. Good stuff. A great crime thriller read. I enjoyed it.
