Product Description

I was never supposed to see him again.
One night of passion with a complete stranger.
My last tryst before senior year.
But I was lost the moment his tempting lips were on my skin.
His intense touch on my body.

It should have ended there.

But he’s not a stranger.
He’s my history teacher.
And wanting him is against the rules.
Off limits.

I received this arc from the author in exchange for an honest review

Unfortunately, I'm only rating Illicit by Ava Harrison 3 stars. I really had to ponder on my feelings when it came to the story and characters overall, and the realism of events. Yes, I know this is fiction, but i feel like it lacked substance and story/character development that gives the reader the emotional connection and is able to draw them in and feel like they are part of the story.

Although this was a teacher/student romance. I feel like this theme was loosely based due to Lynn's age and the lacking of that "forbidden fruit and naughtiness" vibe which I have come to expect in this sub-genre.

I found Lynn's character to be immature and extremely negative. I just wish she'd been portrayed as more mature and stronger, but she just irritated the hell out me instead!

Carson didn't do it for me and I'm putting this down to him lacking true alpha-nism, and his inconsistent way of thinking throughout? He was kinda nerdy in the beginning, then all alpha, which he just didn't pull off successfully in my eyes.

Her mother was almost a breeze-in, breeze-out sort of character, not becoming a pivotal role until much later near the end and her harsh treatment towards Lynn and her bestfriend wasnt justified within the story and if so, I didn't find it believable? I feel like she was misunderstood, but bc her background lacked, I'm not sure if the author wanted her portrayed this way?

Overall this book needed more! More story, more character development and more SEX! Sex is a major player when i choose my reads and this unfortunately, was mediocre to lacking in that area.
On a positive note.

Ava Harrison is fast becoming one of my favourite authors this year. Her latest book Illicit is an all-consuming, angsty, yet forbidden love story that will keep any romantics taste buds wanting more.

The prologue is what captured me to wanting to consume more about this story. The two main characters Lynn and Carson portray a modern day Romeo and Juliet storyline, however there are so many layers to this book that keeps you hooked on what will happen next. I really loved how the characters are not just about conquering each other in bed but about knowing one's self worth and strength.

The story flows effortlessly and every layer wants you wanting to delve more and more into these characters persona's and lives. This is definitely a must read for any readers who love stories of heartache and strength.

Do you know that feeling of wanting to read a book so badly that you couldn't wait to start? Oh boy, I was like that when I was about to start this one.
I've already knew this author from previous books and let me tell you that she's the bomb.
Ava Harrison has a simple, appealing, intense and hot writing that will leave you breathless in a sec. Trust me.
Illicit tells the forbidden story of Lynn and Carson.
Lynn is a senior student that unfortunately is used to be left out and betrayed by the ones who should always protect her. She caught her boyfriend cheating on her and she decides to vow men's off her life for now. One night she had a crazy and wild night with a stranger. That was supposed to be just one night stand but here's the catch. He's her history teacher. Oh boy..
Carson is a History teacher. He's so full of himself that he don't take no for an answer. If he want something he makes sure that he can get it. One wild night with a random woman would be enough but when he finds out that she's his student things will change.
But what change will they face? Can he jeopardize his career? Can she be expelled and don't graduate?
I'm telling you that this book was something else but I won't say anything. You wanna find out more? Make yourselfs a favor and grab it.
Oh boy, let's talk about an intense book. I'm speechless, I'm overwhelmed, I'm happy but sad at the same time. Happy because I loved this story but I'm sad because it ended so fast. I know, I know that I'm selfish but I don't care. I never doubt that this book would be amazing, because knowing this author like I do I knew it would be an epic book, it would be written in the stars.
You will find everything, from love to hate, from betrayal to forgiveness, and the hot stuff is there. Oh boy...
And now what Ava? What masterpieces is that mind of yours creating?

5.0 out of 5 stars Soooo Good!! 6 April 2017

Illicit is filled with all the best things a forbidden student-teacher story has to offer...teenage angst, steamy sex, and secrets too damaging to share.

Lynn is a high school senior dealing with an unfeeling mother and an entitled boyfriend who cheats. Fed up with it all, she decides to have an end of summer fling with the hot guy she meets on the beach...just one amazing night full of stargazing and sex. While she feels a connection to the sexy stranger, Lynn doesn't think she'll ever see him again.
Mystery man Carson starts his new teaching job and comes face to face with the girl from the beach that he couldn't forget. Unfortunately, she's his student.

Ava Harrison perfectly handles the push and pull of their relationship. Lynn and Carson struggle with their taboo feelings, and I felt their pain page after page.
It's an emotional story on many levels. Lynn's life is immersed in drama...her family has a devastating secret, and she's being torn apart by lust, jealousy and love. Carson is a good man trying to keep his job while falling hard for the one girl he can't have, the one person he can't help but hurt.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, heartache and all!

I so wanted to like this one more than I was just ok for me ...wasn't really "feeling it" for some reason....found it hard to connect to the characters ...and truth be told I didn't really like Carson or Lynn ...she came off as kind of a brat and very immature ...Wasn't into Carson either ..he just seemed as though he couldn't control what was in his pants was a good premise and seemed to have potential ...just fell short!

2.0 out of 5 stars Too much drama 9 April 2017
By Iza M - Published on

DNF @58%.

I tried, I did, but when a book reads like a Spanish/Mexican telenovela, it's my cue to slowly step away from it because it has way too much drama and back-and-forth for my taste. Hero's moods are worse than a woman on PMS and he's confusing me, changing his mind every second paragraph.

Heroine... let's not get into it.

So, if you like a lot of drama and above mentioned back-and-forth and yes-but-no in your books, give it a try. As far as writing goes, it was okay but the drama fest just wasn't for me, sorry.

2 stars, my standard DNF rating.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than most in the sub-genre 14 April 2017
By Anne W - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
The forbidden romance between a student and teacher is one of my least favorite romance sub-genres. But the reviews suggested this new-to-me-author's formula was different and included far deeper personal matters than just the usual underage taboo sex-filled hookups. I took a chance and I’m glad I did – even though it will never be a favorite.

Carson Blake and Lynn Adams are both flawed and broken individuals. They both have abandonment issues and other problems that plague their daily lives.

"I've stopped wishing for extraordinary.
I've stopped wishing for that one moment so profound it will change everything.
I know it will never happen, so there's no point in dreaming.
But like all things in life, extraordinary happens
when you least expect it, and in the blink of an eye, everything can change."

Lynn, feeling rejected and unloved by her boyfriend, seeks solace on the beach away from a last hurrah of summer party. There she meets a gorgeous stranger. There's a magnetic attraction between them immediately. They share a little star gazing that ends in a night of passion. Early the next morning, while Blake sleeps, Lynn sees their hookup for what it is, and sneaks out putting it behind her. But come Monday morning, when the sound of the school bell rings welcoming students back for the start of Lynn's senior year, SURPRISE-SURPRISE -- the beach hookup is her first hour history teacher - Mr. Blake.

From there begins a complex and heart-wrenching entanglement that puts everything on the line. I was relieved early on when it was revealed to my satisfaction that both student and teacher were of age. No legal boundaries overstepped. But school rules and regs, moral values and reputations are not so easily thrown aside. And there’s also a new career and college applications on the chopping block as well. Both student and teacher are aware of the rules they are breaking, but as hard as they try to heed them, powerful feelings of attachment might just win out. For Carlson, he puts up walls and tries to divert himself from being alone with Lynn. But sometimes ignoring the situation is far too great -- especially when each day begins facing your greatest temptation eye-to-eye.

"Instead, I build walls. Walls I have no intention of letting her breach. Now to keep them up."

Lynn is younger and a bit of a tease, too. She often confronts her teacher with enticements that are simply too much to resist. When she overhears a female teacher with a speculative eye on Carson, inviting him to join her for a drink, jealousy raises its ugly head, and the situation becomes even riskier. Lynn doesn't handle the event well and chaos ensues -- perhaps this, too, can be attributed to her immaturity.

"Carson Blake is affected by me as I am of him. This isn't an illusion. I didn't imagine this.
We both feel it, we both want this. It should scare me, but it doesn't. Instead, I can finally breathe."

Lynn's life is filled with family drama and devastating secrets, and at one point causes Lynn to be self-destructive. Her mother and father are divorced. Mom is completely unavailable and unbelievably disgusting and selfish. Dad keeps his distance, too. His reasoning has some basis that you'll find out when the time is right. Carson is fresh out of college and starting his first teaching job. He's had his own version of harsh reality growing up, too. He's dedicated, smart and witty -- but a dark shadow of anger and bitterness stemming from his past has left him with anger management issues.

My attention was captured from the beginning by well-developed characterization, along with how well the story moved forward. The profound range of emotions dealt with is mindboggling. Dealing with a multitude of topics surrounding family issues, friendship, healing mind and spirit, coming of age, finding your purpose and making your dreams come true are all confronted. There was never any doubt in my mind that these two shared a deep commitment and an intense desire for each other.

The book started off on a great run, then became a little slow, and finally ended on a rushed effect. I had issues with a few incidents, as well as a couple of unresolved questions that should have been answered, but my interest never wavered. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, heartache and all! Because of the nature of the beast, adding a glimpse of Carson and Lynn five years or so down the road might give their story a more solid ending. On the whole, it's a well-written story, and one I think fans of drama and angst filled teacher/student romances would find a step above most.

Hello Mr. Blake! Student/teacher themes are my favorite taboo subjects. Carson Blake is a beautiful soul who falls for his student before she is actually his student. They both have abandonment issues and other problems that need to be addressed. I loved the first part of the book; I felt a little disconnect towards the end. I think for me it felt a tad rushed. However, I highly recommend this book. I love Ava and her work.
