Someone who has read - and utterly adored - the Mars novels or Aurora by Kim Stanley Robinson, as I have, will throughout the book constantly search for clues that they are mistaken in thinking that somehow this novel is not in the same universe as the others.
Alas, it truely is not, Mars is very different - politically and socially - yet the similarities are sometimes so striking that it can be bothersome (the reason for this being apparently, that this is an early novel). At least it was to me. This, and one other reason, namely the fact that the ending is so mundane, makes me give this book only 4 stars. Don't get me wrong though, the ending is _very_ good. It is thoroughly thought through, it is so very human.
I liked very much to see the perception of facts and history through the eyes of the different main characters in this book; i wholly recommend it.
