Product Description

Where magic is dark and gritty, characters troubled and twisted, and victory comes at a heavy price.

All three books in one.

Deep under the City of Glass in the frozen southern land, an age-old machine radiates a power which locals call icefire. Most citizens are immune to it, but a few, always born with physical disabilities, can bend it to their will.

For fifty years, the ruling Eagle Knights, who fly on the backs of giant birds, have killed these Imperfects, fearing the return of the old royal family, who used icefire to perform evil magic.

Across the border in steam-age, science-focused Chevakia, people have built barriers to protect themselves from the radiation, which is deadly to them.

Chevakia also harbours the old southern royal family’s only surviving members, and they are planning their return to power, taking both countries to the first war in fifty years.

If you like the dark and twisted characters of George R.R. Martin, Joe Abercrombie or Robin Hobb, why not try the Icefire Trilogy today?

ThIs series was a new take on magic. I liked the concept. It was well written and cohesive. The ending was a little bit predictable though, but this didn't detract from a good read.

As I purchased all three books, I'll comment on the 3. In a crowded genre I must admit I was concerned whether this would be just another hohum book and series. However, I was thrilled by the content. Very original but right in the fantasy / science fiction style. The story describes an unusual world where icefire (radiation?) is endemic in one part of the land where it has been controlled to some extent. The generator under the city had been attenuated successfully since the last King had been removed. However in recent times it had been messed with and now it was potentially unstable. When the politics of the land lead to rebellion and the acts of a single person causes a massive explosion and the city is mostly destroyed and becomes uninhabitable, the whole population has to flee with severe burns and effects from the icefire. They head north to their historic enemies land. Personal stories abound around the Eagle Knights from the south and their values. Characters from the people of the north question love, loss, loyalty, courage and personal questioning of self-confidence. A wonderfully complete story within the trilogy. Something that is rare to achieve. So many authors either can't finish a story or leave too many questions leading to dissatisfaction of the book(s). In this case it's complete and satisfactory and leaves enough to have further books in the worlds future. Wonderful read! Because this was so great, I've now purchased another of the authors series 20 years in the future. AND... I'll investigate other books by the same Aussie author. It's fantastic to know WE have great authors in Australia. Only found this out after finishing!

This trilogy was a very pleasant suprise and I have to say I found it to be a completely original story. Unlike anything I have ever read and once I really got into it and understood their world and culture I couldn't put it down! Potential spoiler I will try not to give too much away*** the only negative thing I have to say is in the big build up (especially over the last two books) of good vs evil, so to speak, was it was literally over in 1 paragraph, and I would have liked a bit more info on the demise of two quite crucial characters. That paragraph for me felt a bit flat and was a bit disappointed not knowing more.
Other than that one little bit I love love loved it! If you want to read something different I highly recommend this trilogy.
