THRILLERS THAT RACE FROM THE VERY FIRST PAGE . . .
'Felix Francis' novels gallop along splendidly' Jilly Cooper
‘From winning post to top of the bestseller lists’ Sunday Times
Miles Pussett is a former steeplechase jockey. Now he gets his adrenalin rush from riding down the Cresta Run, a three-quarter-mile Swiss ice chute, head first, reaching speeds of up to eighty miles per hour.
Finding himself in St Moritz during the same weekend as White Turf, when high-class horseracing takes place on the frozen lake, he gets talked into helping out with the horses. It is against his better judgement. Seven years before, Miles left horseracing behind and swore he would never return.
When he discovers something suspicious is going on in the races, something that may have a profound impact on his future life, Miles begins a search for answers. But someone is adamant to stop - and they'll go to any lengths to do it . . .
Praise for Felix Francis's novels
‘As usual with a Francis, once I opened the book, I didn’t want to put it down… Felix’s resolution is darker and more shocking than his father would ever have contemplated, but reflects grittier times and changing tastes in fiction’ Country Life
‘He has become his own man as a purveyor of murder mysteries' The Racing Post
'The Francis flair is clear for all to see' Daily Mail
'From winning post to top of the bestseller list, time after time' Sunday Times
'The master of suspense and intrigue' Country Life

There's not a lot of mystery in this one unfortunately. The entire book is written alternating between present time, and flashbacks to the time of Miles' racing career. The written tense switches between past and present to suit, which I found helpful. It's a bit dark at times, and past Miles' poor choices get a bit frustrating. I prefer a stronger and more capable character, as in previous Francis novels. The narrative doesn't hang together very well in some spots either. I still enjoyed the read, but it's not one of his best sadly. Four stars because I have been a diehard Francis fan for most of my reading life, but it's probably really more like three stars. Here's hoping the next one is back to better form.

What an interesting story, told in two part throughout. It kept me intrigued throughout, feeling sorry for Miles as he worked through his demons, failing miserably and in dire straits. A ray of hope in the older part of the story, and a great climax in the present bring this tale to a satisfying conclusion.
Can I say that the Dick Francis legacy lives on with Felix! Thank you for continuing to bring me, and many others, reading pleasure!

I’ve read all the Dick Francis and Felix Francis books. I look forward to the new release every year. As my title says I’m truly disappointed in this one. I feel like he didn’t have enough material so once again half the book is taken up with describing steeple chasing, jumping. And the other half with tobogganing or at least it feels that way so there is no flow, the whole thing is very disjointed. It takes ages for the real story to start. Everyone is allowed to face one failure however if the next one isn’t up to par I shan’t be buying any more of these books.

Dick’s son is not the wordsmith or creator of intricate plots that his dad was Perhaps not surprisingly. I found it difficult to get the point of this effort. At the end, I called out “is that all?”

Another Francis family exciting page turner about horse racing and more important other things. A great read with many life lessons.

I loved that the story kept switching between times, just as natural thoughts do. People, horses thrills and a bit of fantasy, well done!

How did this book get 4 stars. It was dreadful. Boring and dark. Do not bother! Waste of money.

Not his usual style
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 September 2021Verified Purchase
There was a long wait for this book from the previous one. The style was so different, it could almost have been a different writer and is much slower moving than his previous novels. Very few children can match the success of their parent, but Felix Francis is just as talented a writer as his father. He has bought his own life experiences into both his and his father's novels.

Slowly wins the race?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 September 2021Verified Purchase
This is a bit unusual. A very slow burn. Starts slowly and pretty much continues as such. It's not a bad book, though it's certainly not one of his best. The 1st person present narratives are a bit distracting and I don't see any valid reason for them. It's interesting enough. Just not one of the better books.

Disappointing
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 December 2021Verified Purchase
I think I've read every Dick Francis an Felix Francis book published and since Dick Francis died they have steadily declined in quality "Iced" is the poorest ever. It is written to the usual formula but lacks energy and conviction. The central character battles predictably against the odds but whinges "poor me" incessantly. It is hard to feel sympathy or will him to succeed. The conclusion leaves a nasty taste. Not triumph and vindication but a cheap shot at revenge. The Francis books have brought a lot of pleasure for decades. No more.

Disappointing
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 September 2021Verified Purchase
Very disappointing, weak story, shallow characters, so long in establishing the story, a third of the book competed before the plot began to evolve (very obviously) and a very obvious plot at that!
Author is obviously relying on past success of his father's success or pandering to his own interests and weaknesses.
A great shame as I've been enjoying the dick Francis stable of books for almost 45 years

Much better

I have been disappointed by the previous two novels but felt that this one was back to form. It’s time to remove the name of Dick Francis from the book as it actually has no relevance. If my father’s a good doctor it doesn’t mean that I am! Felix Francis must forge his own path and the strongest areas were the comments on racing for obvious reasons. Will be interested in his next book to see if the improvement is maintained.
