Intriguing ideas and good storytellingReviewed in the United States on 3 December 2018
This was my second Roger Levy book - the previous one was The Rig (which was written after Icarus and, in fact, triggered me to read Icarus). Both books share some similar motifs: child abuse, dominant father figure, authoritarianism, control of masses through religious or quasi-religious manipulations, and both are told in a similar fashion, i.e. they start with several, seemingly independent, stories that are told in tandem, that eventually confluent to form one grander plot. These similarities do not represent needless repetition, rather, they indicate that Levy has developed his own style and ideas, and I found both very engaging. In particular, Levy's inventive capacity is impressive when it comes to imagining new planets with unique environments and to depicting the measures humans adopt in order to inhabit them.
