Going into this book, I went in blind, with only reading the blurb which I am going to tell you is vague. Then the cover hit me and I was absolutely in love. Like everything about the cover of this book screamed all these words at me. It fit Grimm to the T.
Although it gave me questions, like who are the horsemen, what do they do? What am I even going to expect.
This is my first read by this author and I absolutely loved this authors words that were written. One thing I noticed is that she writes unique romances, it’s not your norm, she ventures out to places that not many authors have written about.
To say this book took me by surprise would be an understatement, with this book being the first in the series it is an information loader as it’s setting the tone, the vibe, the layout and the storyline that is going to feature throughout.
Welcome to the Clave? Known as the Cult.
Are you ready to be initiated?
This book sucked me in from the get go, pulled you deep inside of a rabbit hole with no escaping. Everything about this book had me hooked, from the storyline, the characters, the secondary characters and everything else in between.
Sometimes with books, the authors create over the top drama for their characters. In this book it had the perfect blend to keep you wanting more. Their really wasn’t any necessary drama besides learning about the cult, and everything to do with their pasts and present.
Their relationship is rocky at the best of times but being in the cult has its disadvantages, it’s rules that you can’t break and the two have to navigate their way to find a loop hole to make their relationship work as it’s forbidden.
I absolutely love the heroine Abigail and the way she is. She doesn’t take any crap from Grimm, she’s so strong, smart, fiery and harbours her own monster deep inside.
Grimm, his not your ordinary hero. His like the anti-hero in his story. Grimm is definitely one of a kind and unique in his own way that I haven’t read a character like him before. Grimm is like a rubix cube, his very hard to work out and only a few people can see the real him.
There is so many layers to Grimm that you can’t help but want to unravel piece by piece. Wanting to find out what makes this guy tick and what would set his monster free. I was rooting to see his monster be set free. The thing is with Grimm is that he has so many issues and quite frankly mentally unstable.
Together, they just fit, two broken souls blending together to make one. Their scars matched one another, caused by different traumas but created by others that broke them.
Ones darkness calls to another. They know when they want something and they want each other. All Grimm needed was someone who can accept all that he is and to except the different sides to him and Abigail accepted him without a doubt. That is love, that is their perfectly imperfect story.
This book was filled with so many twist and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat in angst and suspense. I am definitely in love with this world that this author has created and I can’t wait for the other horsemen to get their books and to meet the girls that bring them to their knees.

Is it really surprising I loved this? Well no.
.
I didn’t want this book to end. I have loved this! The world is really unique. I love Elenas twists on classic tropes but also what we all know when it comes to myths, legends and fantasy. She definitely takes you on a trip of a lifetime. Be prepared for an emotional roller coaster.
.
Grimm, even though is your brooding rich bad boy, has been twisted and feels more tangible and relatable than others I have read. He’s definitely fascinating. I just want to dive deeper into his character and explore everything about him. Yes he’s a psychopath and at times he did shock me but it just made me want to peel back layers of him to learn more. Abigail, again another relatable character but for me I enjoyed her resilience and determination. Both have their demons and it’s incredible watching as they both navigate them.
.
The contrast between the two characters is great to see. I did want the pace to pick up faster in the beginning. I started feeling like it started dragging and i often felt like I was coming to a standstill when it came to reading it. But the fascination with Grimm kept me going and I’m glad it did!
.
I hope the pace picks up more as the series goes but otherwise I’m loving this. So much layers and interesting use of symbolism in the book. It’s kept my interest and I’m looking forward to how it unravels in the coming books.

Gahhh this book. I’m really stuck in the middle!
A 3 star read for me. Don’t get me wrong, I mostly enjoyed it buuuuuut I just felt like there were bits missing to the story.
One thing that really didn't make sense to me was that Abigail was shocked about the killer side but then nekminnut she is riding along with Grimm on his killing mission and doesn’t even blink an eye?! Apparently she has a dark side too? I personally felt that we got no indication of this at all through the book...
I feel like there was so much missing in regards to this cult that they are a part of. And I know this is book one in the series but I guess I just expected to find out a little more to set the series in motion.
I personally never felt a real connection between Abigail and Grimm... so when they eventually got together, I felt it moved at warp speed.
Like I said, I did enjoy parts to this story. It had me completely intrigued from the very beginning. But after I finished, I just had way too may questions and there were parts that had me thinking that I had missed something.

The Initiation by Elena Monroe is book 1 in ‘The Four Horseman’ series which introduces us to new characters Grimm and Abigail. Grimm is secretive, dark, and unapologetic. The story pulls us into his world as we see what he has to do for his ‘family’ and what that means in the long term for his mental health as well as relationships that he has with others. Enter Abigail, a girl who knows her self-worth, has sass to the maximum and who also recognises Grimm’s monsters since she has her own. From the first time Grimm meets her, she owns him, even though he may fight it and do things to push her away.
The book is full of twist and turns, mystery and some sexy scenes with a slow burn which keeps you turning the pages to find out more. If you’ve read Ms. Monroe before, you know that she is becoming a master of suspense and drawing you in as a reader. There is a lot going on in the book and you are introduced to a whole host of characters that play a part in making Grimm who he is and push him to make decisions which sometimes go against who he is….what the Clave are willing to get him to do to Abigail is one prime example. But the build up in the relationship between Grimm and Abigail is what makes this book special. It’s not a cute HEA, but rather a raw, often dirty, and twisted kind of romance which makes this book a great read.
It will be interesting to see how the rest of this series goes and how all the threads come together.
ARC received for a fair, honest and sometimes long review 😊

This book follows the developing relationship between Grimm (death) and Abigail as the form try’s to figure out why he’s acting this way. I was hook from the first page and the blurb pulled me right in before I received the book itself. I will definitely be recommending thins one to people

A mind-numbingly twisted dark romance!!!!!
Reviewed in the United States on 7 August 2020Verified Purchase
This is my first Elena Monroe book. She thought up an extremely unique plot for this story. I loved the idea of it. The initiation was a story that was mind numbingly twisted with so many turns and unpredictable moments that will have you saying WOW!
This book is based in Los Angeles and centers around a cult with an Illuminati feel. It has 4 horsemen, chaos, war, famine, and death. Each of the founding families has a son they have in their business doing their dirty work for them. This book (book 1 of 4) is based on Jason Rothschild. Jason or as he is known as Grimm is a monster. He is a trained killer. Having such a dark past Grimm does not let many in besides his three brothers. The complexity of Grimms character throughout the book is extraordinary. He is such an in-depth character and you learn so much about his personality and why he does things the way he does and functions certain ways. The growth and rawness you experience with him is some of my favorite for any character.
Abi is a LA transplant coming from Chicago with her own dark past. She works at Clave where the four horsemen run the business. She is abruptly removed from Victory’s desk as his assistant and moved to Grimms. The way these two start is almost like water and oil. Their love story is as warped as they are. But it has some incredibly adorable moments. They have to go through so many hurdles and hoops. This stirs up their past and peels layers upon layers of doubt, grief, and horrors to the surface. Bringing them closer causes risks especially when the family does not want impure blood in their cult. Do they have to accept their ultimate fate of always being alone due to the skeletons in their closet or can they find a way to make their love work? This was one heck of a rollercoaster.

I crave this darkness!
Reviewed in the United States on 13 August 2020Verified Purchase
This book is dark and gritty. Nothing is held back. The world building is absolutely amazing. Everything intricately put together to give you the background of this world that Grimm has been living and breathing.
Grimm is damaged and broken and carries demons from what he has to be in this so called life. He'll do what he has to do to quiet those demons. He never expected Abigail to come breaking at his hard shell, leaving behind the smallest of cracks. Their relationship is messy, painful, and oh so dirty.
Abigail isn't what she appears on the surface. She carries secrets of her own that'll bring you to your knees. Her and Grimm are perfectly imperfect. Their dark matching each other's darkness. Nothing is easy. Its broken and bruised from the start.
Another perfectly dark read from Elena that'll keep me coming back for more!

A fantastically delicious dark romance with cult vibes
Reviewed in the United States on 2 February 2021Verified Purchase
I loved this first book of the 4Horsemen series by Elena. This story was intense, steamy, and packed with tons of twists. Grim and Abigail, both, are complex characters and are the perfect example of dark/light (opposites attract). Grim being the cold, detached contract killer, I can’t help but love this guy because when he finally fell in love he did it hard and didn’t look back. Abigail is one of my favorite heroines I have read in awhile - this girl is brave and doesn’t let her past define her, she has a heart of gold and isn’t afraid to look death in the face. I enjoyed the whole secret society/cult vibe and how Elena gave glimpses of the underworld along with interweaving the other characters - Justice, Vic, Khaos, and Bo. This was a surprise for me, it went in a direction I was expecting and I am so happy that I couldn’t predict the outcomes. I can’t wait to see where Elena takes this series.

I was really blown away, this is my first read from this author so I wasn't sure what to expect. Oh boy, she did not disappoint. I am still trying to sort out my feelings about this book. But I can say that I absolutely loved it and I can't wait for the rest of the series.
I loved the concept and storyline, it was interesting and kept me wanting more. It started off a bit slow but it did pick up towards the end. I absolutely loved Grimm, I know he is kind of a mess but my heart just loved him. Truthfully, I want more. I will continue this series and will explore the author's backlist. I'm hooked!
