Elise might not know why it happened, but she knows that people like her are never too far from catastrophe. This isn’t the first time her family has been struck by tragedy. Perhaps, she hardly dares to imagine, the killer who haunted them decades ago before fading into legend has returned. Perhaps, this time, she is going to lose everything.
As a reader, I was immediately sucked in. Gayle’s writing is rich with layered meaning, and the voices of her characters are drawn in such intimate—and at times harrowing—detail that they lingered with me for weeks after reading. Elise’s world is crashing down around her—even more so, when her family is implicated in Ida’s murder.
I raced through this gripping suspense, but the deeper I delved, the less sure I felt about the people around Elise. Whom can she trust, when so many of those closest to her are liars—including her deceased daughter? If you can’t choose the ones you love, one thing is clear: Elise will have to find out the truth, once and for all, before her choices come back to finish what the killer started.
