Loved this Zen Buddhist type story about a professional animal hunter, the descriptions of the country of Tasmania and the dynamics of the family who host him are very well written. The ending is a surprise, and I really was absorbed in this book.

I really enjoyed the Willem Dafoe film for its atmosphere, landscapes and its compelling main character (which owes so much to the screen presence of Mr Dafoe), so I bought the book to see what that was like. What a disappointment.
It's a short, somewhat tedious book. The author gets a bit carried away with some of the thoughts she has her character mull over and it is not a convincing portrayal of a man, no matter that he is supposed to be a strange character.
I struggle to understand the good reviews this book received (quotes from which adorn the cover). The film, while far from perfect, is an improvement.
I really enjoyed the Hunter and loved the main character. He was quite a self-sufficient and insular person who developed an openness as the story progressed. I was fascinated as the hunt went on for the last Thylacine. This book felt different from other books and created a realism and authenticity about it - less seemed more in the style of writing. It was a book that left a mark with me.
