A good read after book one. A bit darker but not an intense thriller. More of a romance with a twist of mystery. I will be looking for book three.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love, Love This Series! 7 May 2014
By Jackie's Book Reviews - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
This is the second book in the series “The Men of the Halfway House” We still have Matt and the wonderful Julian in this book but they become secondary characters now to Cameron Pierce and Hunter Donovan.

Cameron Pierce was the first inmate to be let out on the release program to The Halfway House if you read A Better Man at the end. Sam had worked hard to get Cameron who was accused of murder on an early release and to get him over to Matt and Julian’s. With Matt’s help Cameron gets a job at the local diner owned by friends of Matt’s a husband and wife. After being incarnated for ten long years Cameron has a lot of catching up to do with society. Of course there are demons that Cameron is faced with dealing and everyday he worries if freedom will be taken away from him again.

Enter Hunter Donovan who is a Assistant State Attorney who goes to the diner every day for a home baked cookie and a cup of coffee. Today is not like any other day for Hunter because when he get’s in line to try the new coffee/espresso machine that Cameron found and set up to use BAM….he is done, done, done. One look at those eyes of Cameron and Hunter melts like butter, of course Cameron see’s Hunter as someone he could go for but he is very wary of what Hunter is about. Could it be Cameron’s coffee that makes Hunter want to keep going to the diner everyday, all day, anytime and thinking about it/him consistently….well what do you think not! (well, he apparently does make a good cup of joe in the book)

As Cameron starts to come forward Hunter is their waiting for him full force. I just loved the attraction and the bond that these two men have in this book. It is beautiful the way Jamie wrote their story. Hunter becomes totally committed to Cameron but Cameron can’t say the words that Hunter longs to hear because he is afraid that this will all go away in a blink of an eye. There are those that want Cameron back in prison for good and it is up to Hunter to find out who and what the reasons are for Cameron’s return to prison. With everything that Hunter has in him he vowels to protect Cameron no matter what and become the strength that Cameron needs to face the horrid world that he once knew. One of my favorite lines in the book is when Cameron asks Hunter “Are you ever going to get tired of saving me?” “Never” Hunter replies.

There are some new characters too in this book like Hunter’s father who is written like the best father a person can have, who not only loves his son unconditionally but loves Cameron too something that Cameron never had with his own father. We also get to know newcomer to the house Cole who gets on Julian’s last nerve every time he opens his mouth and I think he will be next to have his story in The Men of the Halfway House which I am hoping….

I can honestly say that I loved both books of this series and that if you read A Better Man than you definitely must read A Hunted Man.

5.0 out of 5 stars this was sooooo gooooood! 6 May 2014

This was soooooo sooooo good! Honestly, this is better than A Better Man and I absolutely loved that second edition.

When the first book ended, we were hinted to the appearance of the first tenant for The Halfway House that Matthew Doner and Julian Capeletti set up. With their new house finally ready for occupancy, A Hunted Man opens to a young Cameron Pierce finally being released from a lengthy prison stay. With those first few pages, I just KNEW that this was a much different Jaime Reese book. The writing style has changed so much, for the better, and astoundingly, it is very visual and quite auditory. This is not a horror where that is to be expected. This is a romance thriller and it set such vivid imagery that it took me by surprise and made me smile from start to finish.

When Cam reaches the halfway house, the rules are immediately set into place by Matt and Julian. Cam needs this, he likes order. He can follow rules. He was good at that.

What he could not handle was the acceptance he felt from these two men. And his own room with an attached bathroom. With these new changes that may point him to a much, much better future, Cam falls into a panic attack that sets the tone of this whole story. Cam's past is filled with such torture and pain and it starts the question: how did he end up in maximum prison? A second question: with his tarnished record, who in his right mind would develop a relationship with a man like him - and stay? Actually, stay?

Assistant District Attorney, Hunter Donovan, was a regular at the diner that Cam worked in. Stepping into it one hectic day, he immediately notices the subtle changes: the diner is cleaner and there was this beautiful new employee. Best of all, this new guy presented him with a deliciously-arted cafe latte. Something the diner never served before. Things started getting really, really interesting at this point.

This is a real love story unfolding itself from simple words. And yet the simplicity of the writing made this such a delight to read for as things developed from good to bad to good then worse then bliss, it was still a simply written romantic story. The relationship that developed between Cam and Hunter was fast on the uptake but they never rushed through it. Instead, due to the circumstances of Cam's parole and Hunter's rigid and intense schedule, they were both forced to take things easy and get to know each other more before taking on that final step. This upped their relationship into something more than initially thought.

The drama here is not really drama per se. We have a mystery that needs to be solved and it involves politics and drug related crimes that Cam never knew he was even a part of - although this does explain a lot of things including his landing in maximum prison. It is this convoluted criminal move that landed him in jail even if things were too coincidental and too circumstantial to even be logically acceptable in court. Hunter's need to prove Cam's innocence is a great read for it shows the different layers of this man as well as his different personalities when faced with different situations. He could be very brutal and manipulative: a trait that is a must for a successful criminal lawyer. This is what sealed it for me for this book. The layered personality was so successfully written in but never once overwhelmed the man who was the lover and the friend.

All in all, this was such a fantastic read, quite different from the more haunting and sweet first installment. I don't know what Jaime Reese did, maybe this is the real author blossoming out, but I can honestly say: I. Just. Love. This. Book!

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT 29 April 2014
By Donald P. Bradshaw - Published on

Do not let the length of this beautifully written story put you off. There is so much going on in the story that I was finished before I knew it. It's a romance story, detective story and suspense story all rolled into one. All of the characters both good and nasty are well shaped with their own unique qualities. It was good to see Matt, Julian and Sam again. This was no insta-love cookie cutter story but a well plotted novel. There are twists and turns throughout the story but the one constant is the connection between Cam and Hunter and even their HEA is twisted by the ingenious Ms Reese. What I really enjoyed was that while the story involved the Halfway House, it was not dependent upon the Halfway House or Matt and Julian. Highly recommended story that you will get lost in.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Story and Good Romance 12 May 2014

Interesting story line, and good character development. There were parts I had to reread because I lost the thread. It was sometimes difficult to follow who said what. The emotional scenes were well written - the sex scenes were OK, though a bit long. And the one sex scene in the car while driving was just ridiculous! Sure, you can dream up that sequence of actions, but it was as unreal as unicorns.

5.0 out of 5 stars Passionate Love! Steamy! Brilliant Story! 12 May 2014

This is the second installment of The Men of Halfway House....A Hunted Man by Jaime Reese!

Cameron Pierce has survived his 10 years in prison and now he must try to put his past behind him which is no easy task. Now that he is a free man he must adjust to the outside life which brings him to the halfway house and a job. The one thing he has learned in prison is that hope can be a very dangerous thing to strive towards. Hunter Donovan is the Assistant State Attorney and he loves nothing more than a challenge except maybe justice. He has dedicated his life to his career and now that his career is thriving, he has come to realize how lonely he actually is.

When Hunter meets Cameron everything in his world is about to change. Young Cameron awakens things in Hunter that he has never experienced before and this opens his heart to love. Cameron's past comes back and it threatens their new blossoming relationship and might possibly be too much for them to endure. Now Cameron's hope for a fresh new start and a happy and loving future doesn't look as bright. Will the outside forces that are hunting Cameron to send him back to prison be able to catch him or will Hunter protect and defend the man he loves?

I was very happy to see Matt and Julian from book 1 in The Men of Halfway House but they are secondary characters but so nice to see them again. I loved the beautiful bond that Cameron and Hunter developed as I was glued to their connection and to see how much they cared for each other. The author wrote these characters in such an emotional and brilliant way that I couldn't wait to see what happens next. I fell in love with Cameron and Hunter and was so rooting for them and I felt very protective of their characters, especially when outside forces were trying to break them up and take Cameron away from his beloved Hunter. I adored how Hunter becomes so emotionally committed to Cameron but Cameron has a hard time expressing himself to Hunter as he's afraid that Hunter will disappear with his heart.

I loved that the author introduced new characters in this 2nd book as it's always fun getting to know her characters. Hunters father is quite the most amazing father ever, the way he loves his son unconditionally and even cares deeply for Cameron also. I just love his father and how his character brings so much much love and caring to the men was so brilliantly and well written. I highly recommend this beautifully written love story to anyone who loves reading about M/M love, hot sex, redemption, trust, loyalty, drama and brilliant and I mean brilliant writing!
