When I commenced learning about AI and machine learning, the first textbook I bought was 'AI: A Modern Approach' by Russell & Norvig. This remains by default the most popular AI text in the world. However, it is also extensive and quite large, which may not suit the ones who want to get to ML study straightaway. For those, I recommend this book, which is really concise and gets you on to the maths/equations of ML straightaway.
I have access to a pdf version of the book, but decided to buy a hard-copy of it as well, it's a precious book that explains the concepts of machine learning techniques in an easy understanding way. Very useful if you need to explain fundemtals to others or valuable learning materials for people who would like to learn more about data analysis and machine learning techniques.
