These basic Hoya HMC Slims are the filters to buy if you want good optical performance, don't need to clean your filter very often, and have a limited budget. Unlike most of the Chinese no-name filters, Hoya's quality Japanese glass and coating does a good job at helping the filter disappear optically with a minimum of added flare or other artifacts. The slim ring helps prevent vignetting with wide angle lenses while still accepting a standard lens cap (some "stepped" slim filters have a different diameter outer ring). It's also well machined and doesn't feel like it's going to destroy the plastic threads on the front of your lens like some of the Chinese filters do.
The downside to these filters is the coating isn't especially durable, easy to clean, and doesn't repel anything. If those things are important, I'd suggest the B+W "Nano" filters but they're roughly 3 times the price. Hoya also has more expensive options with more durable coatings.
