I'm glad I purchased this book. Universities tend to mainly focus on the course content and not so much on exam and essay technique, leaving you to figure out these things for yourself through homework assignment feedback and the like. Many students perform poorly because of this, in spite of having learnt the material well. This book does a good job of explaining the various techniques and strategies required in order to achieve a first and therefore fills an important gap in most courses. I would go so far as to say it is essential to read a book of this nature, and all law courses ought to put one on their required reading lists.
A couple of minor criticisms which do not detract in any way from me recommending it (but justified me dropping a star):
1. It can be slightly on the repetitive side. As any law student knows, your studying time is extremely valuable and must be allocated wisely. I'd therefore have appreciated points only being made once to keep the size of the book down. I'd suggest speed reading or skimming any paragraphs which are just reiterating earlier points.
2. The book places too high an emphasis on studying outside of your course's textbooks in order to achieve a first. It's important to realise that every university is different, and that you may not be justified in spending a big chunk of your time doing extracurricular reading, if you could easily achieve a first by staying within the required reading on your course. Again, this comes back to the point that law students have high demands placed on their time, and it is important to be able to prioritise. In particular, I'm studying a GDL (which is a little less demanding than a three year law degree) and when I asked my tutor about this, was emphatically told that everything needed to achieve a first was contained within the lectures, tutorials, and study notes, and to a lesser extent, the official textbooks. Of course, your particular course may very well require you to do extensive outside reading, and I advise checking this point at an early stage with your tutors before deciding how to allocate your studying time. Don't just blindly follow this book's advice in that regard.
Note: this book only briefly discusses the very basics of essay writing, and is not intended for that purpose. It mostly assumes that you already know how to write an essay to A-Level standard. If you are not at that level yet I would recommend first reading a generic guide to writing essays for A-Levels and then move on to this book.

Review from previous edition The author has a strong vision of what works in legal writing, and has broken it down for others to follow. For many students, this can be more powerful than a more eclectic approach. (Professor Peter W Edge, School of Law, Oxford Brookes University)
Strong built this book with a very accurate structure. CLEO is a method which captures the essential elements of rendering legal analysis, it is logical and comprehensive. Provides a comprehensive overview to studying law and writing legal essays. Strong provides an in-depth approach to tackling legal essays. The method she presents only really applies to problem questions in legal essays rather than discursive. Helpful for any law student however.

Helpful. The page layout is reminiscent of study modules, which does not make for easy reference in my opinion. Takes a bit of getting used to, but is filled with brilliant tips and examples.
