OMG I loved this couple as much as the two couples before them and I can not wait for any couple that comes after. Stephanie is amazing at telling a story and keeping you interested. I only left these books under duress

I have been waiting this book – ever so patiently – the first two books knocked my socks off, they were that good.
This book comes with both elation and a devastating frustration. I try to avoid poo-sandwich reviews but I can’t not voice my honest opinion.
The good!
Stephanie is able to take the reader on a journey through all the emotions. Once I was past the part that will be in the ‘not so good’, I was on each side – willing them to come together.
I loved having the cross over characters from book one and book two reappearing to give me updates on what they are up too. There were many hand clapping and flapping moments. The characters are very relatable. Their troubles will resonate with readers and I have to applaud Stephanie for not only being able to write a story that covers a single father finding love again but writing about domestic abuse in a respectful way.
There are developments in this book that had me gushing with a huge smile on my face. There are many witty barbs that had me laughing out loud. Fans of HEA’s need to have this on their ‘to read’ list.
The not so good!
I’m well aware that some readers will not be bothered by these two things and that’s okay but I would be lying if I didn’t mention them.
These two things bugged me so much that they were at the forefront of my mind while reading and really put a dampener on my enjoyment of this book. The lie being used as conflict. I don’t know why the lie wasn’t sorted out then and there but I can see that Stephanie held onto it to use as a catalyst for a major blow up towards the end of the story with the intention of drama. Doing this makes my eye twitch. To be, this beautiful love story was overshadowed by this one component and to me, discredited their story.

How my Heart Breaks, Stephanie Smith's 3 book in the Try Again series, is another outstanding read, that you cannot put down until you get to THE END.
I know because I tried to last night or should I say early this morning (3am). I have the bags under my eyes to prove it.

Sweet, romantic and wonderful characters who grab at your heartstrings.

This review is from reading a ARC copy of the book.

This is my favourite Stephanie Smith book so far, I loved the others but this one stands out. The story is beautiful, the characters are loveable (as they were before) and its leaves you feeling warm and fuzzy without it being sappy.
I was waiting for the angst and when it did come was surprised with how and I love that it wasn't the horridness that I was expecting.
I cannot wait for more from Steph

4.0 out of 5 stars Lana feels like she loses anyone she loves and is scared to ... 5 September 2015
By steamy book momma - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
This is the third book in the series and I think you need to read them in order to really understand what is happening and how everyone is connected. This book is about facing the things that happened in your past and figuring out how to move forward. Realizing that you can’t change what happened. Finding that one person who makes realize that you want to learn how to move forward and find a way to have a future with that person. Jake is in the Army and lost his wife 4 years ago. He is a single father who hasn’t even dated anyone in the last four years. Lana has recently gotten away from and divorced her abusive husband. Lana and Jake meet when Jake’s friend rescues Lana from her house that has caught on fire. Jake’s friend calls him and tells him to come help him. He can’t be caught there. He wants Jake to say he rescued Lana. When Lana opens her eyes Jake feels this overwhelming urge to protect her and be near here. They have a one night stand and don’t think they will ever see each other again. Three months later when Jake takes his daughter to her first day of school he is surprised to find that Lana is his daughter’s teacher. Lana can’t believe her eyes when she sees Jake dropping his daughter off in her classroom. They haven’t stopped thinking about each other for the last three months. This is where the story takes off. Lana is still finding herself after everything that happened with her ex-husband. Jake learned to go after what he wanted in the army and to never give up. Lana feels like she loses anyone she loves and is scared to love Jake and his daughter and then lose them. Will Lana take and chance on Jake? Will Jake be able to convince Lana to give him a chance? I love this whole series. This book was just as great as the first two books in this series. The characters have been through so much but they find a way to overcome it and move forward. They don’t give up sometimes they need help from their friends and family to see what they have to could have. I love that you get to read about the characters in the previous book in the future ones. I can’t wait to read the next book when it comes out. Stephanie is a great author. She writes wonderful stories with fantastic characters. The characters pull you and make you wish that they were real so you could maybe friends with them. I can’t say enough about Stephanie and her books.
I was given this book in return for an honest review.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another heartwarming story from Stephanie Smith! 4 September 2015
By Natasha - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
Quick summary - Jake and Lana don't have the most conventional meeting when he is sucked in to rescuing her from a fire. Nonetheless the two experience a fiery chemistry they haven't felt before. Months later they still feel the connection, if anything it has intensified, though Jake is hiding a secret regarding the truth of their first meeting. And Lana has her own demons from the past to come to terms with. The story follows them, their journey to become a part of each others' lives and everything that entails, and also learning to trust each other. It's a very sweet story, and I definitely enjoyed the read from start to finish.

Jake is, for the most part very gentlemanly and it's great to see how deeply he falls for Lana. Although he's a military man, now working from the base in order to raise his daughter, I didn't fully get the 'military' vibe from him, though we only really got to see the family side of him. Lana is very sweet as the school teacher, cautious when it comes to a new relationship but she warms so quickly to his daughter Hallie who is adorable. It's also really nice to see characters from the previous book and how close a network of friends they form. I particularly felt intrigued by Georgia, Lana's close friend, so I'm glad to see the next book in the series will be involving her.

The story had less of the dramatic 'rise and fall' that was present in the first book, although it's certainly not a smooth road for them. There are tough topics covered but they didn't seem as prominent as in the earlier book in the series. I didn't quite feel the same connection to the characters that I hoped to, though I couldn't put my finger on why that was. They were likeable, we got a great insight into their emotions. Perhaps I'm just addicted to the drama! There was a nice flow to the story, and I was rooting for both Jake and Lana all the way through.

Definitely an enjoyable read, Stephanie writes lovely emotional romance stories and I'll be waiting for the next in the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very sweet heartfelt story 3 September 2015
By Jo Fergus - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
He turns, and my heart stops as his face becomes clear. Every detail is in perfect clarity, from the darkness of his eyes to the stubble on his jaw. His eyes shoot to mine for the first time, wide and panicked, and I gasp for air.

Lana is at home asleep in her bed one night and the next thing she remembers is waking up on her neighbour's lawn, with her head in the lap of a stranger. A white knight who saves her from her burning castle... I mean house. It was a surreal moment for her, looking up into the eyes of a very handsome man.

'My white knight. My savior. He is gorgeous. Untouchable gorgeous. The type of gorgeous you only see walking around with a blonde supermodel on his arm.' - Lana

Jake Weston wasn't there by chance but alas he was there and there is something about this beautiful sweet woman that has him wanting to be that white knight for her. It is one of those freaky in the moment connections, like he can almost see his future playing out with her in it.

'Something about her tells me to be gentle with her. To tread carefully where she is concerned.' - Jake

After spending one night together that ends up being more than either of them expected they part ways and don't see each other again for a few months. Jake has not been able to get this woman off his mind and he hasn't felt this way about anyone for years. He is a single father to his young daughter Hallie and completed devoted to being the best dad he can be for her. He doesn't want to be alone for the rest of his life and can't help wondering if he just missed his big chance at that with Lana.

Both Lana and Jake are shocked when they see each other again and that undeniable draw they have becomes too difficult to ignore, despite Lana's attempts to. This is the man that saved her life, he is loyal and trustworthy, nothing like any of the men from her past. Or is he? Jake is hiding something from Lana about that night and the longer he keeps his secret, the harder it is to fess up.

I just love reading stories about a single parents who are experiencing a second chance at love and especially loved reading all the interactions in this story between Lana and Hallie. The issues faced were portrayed very realistically when it came to introducing someone new into an established 'family.' Stephanie did a great job in showing what has now become a common situation for many children. This is a really sweet feel good story that had me absorbing all the heartfelt moments with a big smile on my face.

'A man can do many things to get the hormones in a woman flowing - wearing a suit, opening a door, riding a motorcycle. But there is something insanely hot about a man with his child.' - Lana

This is the third book in this series but can also be read as a stand alone. However we do get to spend time and catch up with the characters from the first two books.

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!! 2 September 2015
By Barbara (Paging Through The Days) - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
First off let me thank Stephanie and Give Me Books for passing a copy of this book to me to read in exchange for an honest review. Secondly, I'm just kinda... I don't know. I am a HUGE fan of Steph’s and have been crawling the walls waiting on this book. This series is one of my favorites and I swear I can never get enough! So many emotions in one book. My God, I loved it. Literally every chapter had me pacing (figuratively) and wanting to see what was going to happen next. I knew there was more to Lana than what we saw in "Whatever You Do". The backstory is always what pulls at your heart strings. And man let me tell you, Steph can pull your heart strings. Ha. Its one of the reasons I love her books so much. Each one is like a bomb of emotions waiting to happen. Waiting to seep inside you as you read.

Here we go..

Lana, Tate's older sister has had a rough life. They both have. First losing their parents, then their grandparents.. and now.. things are all new again. She's newly divorced from a man that is the scum of the earth and she is scared. Honestly, she has every right to be. So the night her house catches fire and she is rescued by her prince charming and spends the night being worshiped in ways she never knew was possible. Months pass after her one night stand. The one night that made her feel alive. As the summer comes to an end Lana thinks her life is on track... until she looks up at someone calling her voice and sees him. Her savior standing in the door of her kindergarten class with his daughter Hallie she is overwhelmed.

Absence and desire makes the heart grow fonder I think. But.. for Lana and Jake all it did was build up a need and want for each other. It had been three months since she had seem him. The night he saved her had been so long ago now. She tried to not let it affect her but come on.. a big strapping military man is on his knees, your head in his lap when your eyes open.. how can you not think about that and what those thoughts could turn into. Lana tries to fight it. The connection she feels… well it finally wears her down.

As the time passes both Jake and Lana grow closer, getting into a comfortable routine of work and home life together. But the worry that has always consumed Lana is still there. What happens if she gets close to him and something takes him away from her. She is determined she is jinxed. But it would be double worse now. Not only would she lose Jake, she would lose Hallie. And the fact that she is in love, I mean head over heels for Jake scares her to death. Secrets of the past start to make their way to light and when she gets a call saying her brother has been hurt it snaps something in her. Everything in her life tumbles upside down and she is just lost. And now thanks to her over reaction she is alone. Having pushed Jake not so nicely out of her life.

But you know how they say fate has a way of bringing two lost souls back together with the ones they are meant to be with? Well that is the role Tate, Harper and Georgia (Lana’s friend) take on. You can’t fight destiny. You have to embrace it, roll with the punches and in the end give in, let your heart belong to the one its meant to be with and all live happily ever after.. or as close to happy as you can get.

Again, I effing LOVED this book. I gushed to Steph already but dang, can’t say enough good things about it. There were many times I wanted to go in the book and smack some sense into Lana. Can’t lie but the girl has issues, and for a good reason. I can’t leave out Jake, he needed a swift kick in the arse a time or two as well. Ha. I think the only safe one in the book was Hallie and she was too stinkin’ cute for words. I plan to read this series over and over again.. I do love it that much.

4.0 out of 5 stars 4 stars for How My Heart Breaks 3 September 2015
By Carra at Making it Happen blog - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
How My Heart Breaks is the first book that I've read by this author. While it is part of the Try Again series, it can be read as a standalone, though you may get additional enjoyment of the story if you read the other books in the series first.

The story starts off on a dramatic note, and right from the very beginning I found Jake to be a fantastic male lead. Not just because he's a hot, sexy and strong character, but also because he's a fantastic father to his little girl Hallie (and I'm not one who is normally moved by the parent thing in a romance story). He is loving, caring and well as loyal--even when he really would rather not be (sorry, you'll have to read the story to find out why on that one, can't spoil that for you!).

Lana has a broken past from losing almost all of her family except her brother, in addition to a horrible ex-husband, leaving her wary of loving others. After her house fire, she and Jake are thrown together for a short time, sparking a connection that they both feel-though acting on it other than that night of the fire is a bit more than they are ready for. Or is it?

Lana and Jake fit together like two peas in a pod, and once you add Jake's daughter into the equation, they seem like they could be the perfect family. But just when everything seems so comfortable, we get a double injection of drama that throws everything into disarray.

A great story that kept me engaged, How My Heart Breaks was a 4-star read for me, and I'd recommend it to contemporary romance fans...especially those who love a fantastic single father as the male lead (go ahead, swoon now).
