I am a big fan of these clever, clever thrillers. DeMarco is a lazy gopher within the White House, working on slightly dodgy jobs for the (ex) Speaker of The House. And this is a White House that works through gentle favours and low level corruption, but in reality all DeMarco wants is an easy life, a bit of golf and a BBQ. He's my role model.
DeMarco has the benefit of looking tough but the reality is that he is proficient with neither fists or weapons. A lot of the time the people around him catch on a lot quicker than he does and this is the unique aspect of these books, no central all action hero but quite an ordinary guy.
In Blood House he is asked to have a look at the circumstances under which someone has been convicted of murder, mainly to appease the guy's mother. But he has been framed as part of a pharmaceutical company's desire to launch a new medicine and the need for unwitting test subjects. We get considerable perspective on the bad guys and their motives here, nothing is black and white. So DeMarco blunders into an investigation assisted by the mysterious Emma (another great character) to flush out the truth.
I really enjoy the way the author presents his characters with the framework of US politics and `deals' and I find the novels a refreshingly different aspect of the political thriller. Blood House is a welcome addition to the DeMarco series and recommended.

About the Author
A former senior civilian executive for the U.S. Navy, MIKE LAWSON is the author of seven novels starring Joe DeMarco: "The Inside Ring," "The Second Perimeter," "House Rules," "House Secrets," "House Justice," "House Divided" and "House Odds." He lives in Seattle. --This text refers to the paperback edition.
Praise for House Blood "A what-happens-next, edge-of-your-seat thriller, told with the author's clear prose and storytelling skills. I know that Mike Lawson has methodically grown a loyal base of fans, but I think that his consistent excellence needs to be more universally acknowledged. This is a very ambitious book and I'm hopeful it will be the one that propels him into best-sellerdom. He certainly deserves it and his publisher does as well."--George Easter, Deadly Pleasures "The plot and pace are relentless, and the milieus of Congress, D.C., and disaster relief seem knowingly presented. But character creation is Lawson's greatest talent, and Fiona, her supersoldiers, and of course, the ever-cranky cynic, DeMarco, will rivet readers' attention. A host of lesser characters are nearly as engaging. House Blood is so good it will move long-time political-thriller readers to recall the memorable characters, with, and style of the late, great Ross Thomas."--Thomas Gaugin, Booklist (starred review) "Lawson's seventh novel in his Joe DeMarco thriller series is another page-turner brimming with authentic Washington, DC, detail and distinctive, engaging characters. Even the bad guys are interesting. Adventure-seeking readers will love [it]."-- Sheila M. Riley, Library Journal Praise for Mike Lawson: "Joe DeMarco, 'fixer' for Speaker of the House John Fitzpatrick Mahoney, is shrewd, tough, discreet, and resourceful... Lawson creates multifaceted characters... [and] the pacing is relentless...." --Thomas Gaughan, Booklist (starred review) "I love Joe DeMarco. ... These are wonderful. I think they're inventive, nicely detailed, just a treat to read."--Nancy Pearl "One of the most engaging heroes I've ever encountered." --Tess Gerritsen --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.

Great read. Grabs you from page 1Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 October 2018
Great story and so well written and nothing less than a stand out read for me. I did make a nuisance of myself to be able to get Mike Lawsons books here in the UK. Read em and you will know why.
Mike Lawson gets better abd better.Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 February 2013
Once again Joe DeMarco gets snarled up in a nasty political mess not of his own making. An exciting story of Joe versus the Baddies, full of wonderful dry humour, and much sniping at US politicians and big business. It is so easy to identify with Joe - man of honour, patriotic, loves his country, all tempered with a lazy and sometimes less than courageous streak.

Deeper than a puddleReviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 August 2016
Excellent series ; Joe has his lighter moments and this blends well with some of the heavy stuff he has to deal with .Entertaining characters and the writing is top notch. The author deserved 5 stars but the book was slightly soiled .
Another good mysteryReviewed in Canada on 20 April 2013
Had the pleasure of meeting Mike Lawson who is from Seattle. His quite believable political/mystery plots are more interesting because they are set in real places.
