Product Description

First we were friends. Then we were roommates. Now I want more…

What can I say about Chess Copper? The woman is capable of bringing me to my knees. I know this about five minutes after getting naked for her.

No one is more surprised than me. The prickly photographer my team hired to shoot our annual charity calendar isn’t my usual type. She’s defense to my offense, a challenge at every turn. But when I’m with her, all the regrets and darkness goes away. She makes life fun.

I want to know Chess, be close to her. Which is a bad idea.

Chess is looking for a relationship. I’ve never given a woman more than one night. But when fate leaves Chess without a home, I step up and offer her mine. We’re roommates now. Friends without benefits. But it’s getting harder to keep our hands off each other. And the longer we live together the more I realize she’s becoming my everything.

Trick is… Now that I’ve made her believe I’m a bad bet, how do I convince her to give this player a true shot at forever?

I have followed the Game On series by Kristen Callihan all the way through and I feel this strongly character-based book, The Hot Shot, is arguably the best so far (and that's a big statement because the others are fantastic!)
First things first...yes, it's another sports romance and as expected in this genre, there is a formula leading to an HEA. But from the beginning, this book held my attention due to Kristen's excellent writing skills, highlighted by detailed reflections and insightful thoughts about love, life and challenges. Not only did Kristen deliver on well-developed characters and a multilayered plot, she wrapped it up in clever banter, engaging dialogue, delightful humour, scintillating scenes and vivid imagery.
Upon meeting at a photoshoot, famous quarterback Finn and artistic photographer Chess are immediately drawn to each other, but put up protective barriers that morph into antagonism. Quickly, their defenses disintegrate and a spark ignites (meaning they could have found a like-minded friend, possibly lover, something they privately both yearn for). This poignant, sensitive and beautifully written scene, early in the story, brings meaning to the cover shot.
Of course, Finn and Chess' slow-burn journey is dotted with difficulties, compromises, frustrations, hilarious moments, taking risks, tenderness, honesty and a lot of love. It's interesting to note, they're both gorgeous in their own right, but very different people - even in their looks; he is so handsome he's almost pretty and she is not supermodel beautiful, but striking with a touch of goth. The final conflict involved trust, compromise and commitment and I wondered how it would be resolved...very tricky!
The secondary characters deserve a mention, particularly Jake Ryder who was a hoot.

I didn't think it was possible for me to love a BBF from Kristen Callahan more than Dex but Finn has taken over #1 spot. This book has everything I want in a romance. Witty dialogue, well developed characters, smoking hot chemistry and a story line that develops slowly as we get to know everyone. Real emotions are explored, mixed in with enough laughs to keep a smile on my face. Chester is an awesome lead female character and I adored her vulnerability and her feistiness. Add in great supporting characters and you have a perfect read. Definitely recommend this book.

I am inlove! Inlove with Finn Mannus. Finn. Finn. Finn. I love the way he loved Chester. No hold. I love Chess. I am going to show her how much. It was funny and witty. They started off friends which brought the slow burn to their ultimate union. There was also just enough drama to bring it angst that made me feel and shed a few tears. I bookmarked this book a lot. I love how this was written. I felt like I was part of this book. I even felt at times I was Chess and felt how Finn was besotted with her. Kristen Callihan. You are an amazing author. I loved Idol. I should read more and more of your books. This was perfectly imperfect.

I love this author. All the other reviews are on point, and if you've read any of her previous books, you'll know to just buy it. This is a quality, read, funny, poignant, and easy to get lost in. Sad that ive finished it, but I will go back & re read Dex & Fi's story - again -. I love the fact that Finn & Chess's story is played out simultaneously with Dex & Fi. Can't wait for more. Please say Jake, & North get their own story's....

After reading the rest of this series I pre-ordered this book and was definitely not disappointed. Brilliant. Just loved Finn. I've read a lot of romances lately and it was so refreshing to read a fantastically written book that showcases a H who doesn't have to be an ass to be swoon-worthy. For me that is becoming very old. I never felt that Finn was less a man for being so sweet, quite the opposite. Ms Callihan grabbed my interest from the first chapter and held it to the very end. And as with each of the books in this series I was captivated by the romance, the heat and the depth of the story and fell in love with the H alongside the h. I can't wait to see who she will write about next. Can be read as a stand alone but recommend reading the series to better enjoy references to other character's stories.
