Hard Hats: Book Two

When they were teens, Castor McCormick was the bane of Blake Kowalski’s existence. Their mutual animosity led to summers filled with rivalry. Now, nearly two decades later, Cas is moving back into the neighborhood to live in his grandmother’s old house. Blake tells himself he isn’t interested in seeing how snarky little Cas grew up, but when his mother dupes him into visiting his former nemesis, he finds out “pretty” can evolve into “sexy as hell” on the right man.

Cas didn’t think he wanted to see Blake again. No one has ever pushed his buttons like the arrogant boy he remembers from their youth. Turns out, the adult version of Blake still gets him hot under the collar—and everywhere else. With Blake on leave from work to nurse an injured leg and Cas taking time to move and unpack, they form a tentative friendship that turns into a sexual affair neither man can deny. But when Cas’s job sends him out of state to deal with a difficult client, their new relationship will be tested, and if they fail, Blake’s broken leg might not be the only thing to end up scarred.

There was never a doubt that I would love this story. I'm a long time fan of this author, and Blake and Cas's story perfectly illustrates once again why I'm a fan. Her characters are charismatic, multi-dimensional, flawed and fabulous. While this book is technically book two, (the first story, Wood, Screws, & Nails... another fantastic read. *fans self* Two words--Pool Table) HL&S can be read as a standalone.

Okay, what did I like about this story. Everything! Blake's all grouchy, wounded and impatient, but a big softy with his mom. Oy, this grumbly bear had me right from the start. Cas has been focused on his career, but he's ready to experience more of life beyond business meetings and hookups. Both characters are genuine and down to earth with real concerns and goals. Their dialogue is witty, funny and sexy beyond belief. ZOMGurd! And boy-howdy are there ever some scorching hawt mutterings to go along with the off the charts nookie scenes.

Now that I've shared what I liked about the story, lemme tell you what I LOVED. The connection-tension-attraction between Blake and Cas... *Kermit flails* You had me at Frenemies. Gah. Their history from childhood led to brilliant dialogue and mental chattering that had me alternating between howling with laughter, and squirming in my seat. But the story is much more than a sexy snarkfest. The challenges they both face, alone and in coming together, were logical (cannot stress this point enough), and really added to my enjoyment of the story. As always, I know I can count on this author to deliver lots of delicious emotions. Those belly-tug-heart-squeeze moments that have you breathing deep to ease the sting of imminent tears. So. Damn. Good.

What do I want next? I have a list... 1. Gavin, 2. Gavin, 3. Gavin...

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, must read! 2 November 2016

This is the book I have been searching for. Two high school rivals getting to know each other again as adults. Very little drama. You could feel the chemistry between the two MCs ignite whenever they were together. It was beautiful. The little miscommunications were just what two people go through when they first start out. We each have our own insecurities and that was brought to light in a positive way. Very realistic and relatable....and did I mention HOT. Pick this up if you are looking for a sweet, sexy, friends-to-lovers romance. You will not be disappointed!

Second in a series in which the protagonist is a building contractor, this one matches Blake Kowalski (built, bronzed, and sometimes bully), and Castor McCormick (laid-back corporate type) who meet up after 19 years when Cas moves into his grandmother's home after she has retired to Florida. Across the street Blake is just starting to recuperate from a broken leg, moving from his walk-up Chicago apartment to his mother's house.

The two grew up together by staying as far away from each other as they could because they sort of hated each public, because they never spent time with each other in private even through they lives across the street from each other. The "reunion" brings a series of carefully manipulated (by their doting relatives) deja vu incidents which make this a funny, scorching, heart-rendering, slightly incongruous read.

If you want a serious romance with sometimes outlandish twists (the first book's hero, Aaron Costa, and his now lover, much younger Malachi, make an appearance after their off-kilter relationship finalizes), seriously hot men who are just regular guys to the rest of the world, jump into this one. (Unlike the first in the series ("Wood, Screws & Nails") this one suffers from a misleading cover--the man might have been what the artist imagined Blake to look like, but there is no question Blake's hair is curly and free flowing--there are enough references in the book to how Cas...oops!, no spoilers)..

You will find that Ms. Vaughn has probably decided there will be another one in the series just because of the potential for similar relationships developing among other characters in the book. But for now, get this one and relish it--you might need some during the eating scenes, but there's plenty of spice in the sex.

Loved it. Just the pick me up I needed after the hustle and bustle of the holidays. I enjoyed Blake and Cas, great chemistry, sweet, sexy, and fun. I also enjoyed having Aaron and Malachi in the story too. I loved the way small scenes are neatly woven from the timeline in the first book into this one. Fingers crossed for a book for Riley and Gavin.
4.0 out of 5 stars I thought this was a good book. I really like Cas and Blake 26 October 2015

I thought this was a good book. I really like Cas and Blake. It was a very easy and quick read to me. I like that they didn't spend a lot of the first part of the book really sniping at each other because of how things were between them when they were kids. After their initial reserve wore off they got along well and it wasn't a huge drama.

This story made me happy. I'm an absolute sucker for love stories and this one was great. I really enjoyed the main characters, and I really loved how different they were. They didn't just fall into each other's arms. They worked through real issues.
