I'm primarily a romance fan, and yes, I tend to be attracted to sleek, bold covers with attractive leads on them, with lashings of erotic/hot and steamy sex. I picked this up only as it was free on the Top 100 Kindle and had mention of a bit of romance, so that was enough for me, as I'm kind of running out of reading material at this time of year.
On top of this tale being my kind of romance, I got mystery, baddies, intrigue, secrets, lies, dry humour and wit, innuendo, some get-you-own-back situations, some cloak-and-dagger stuff, red herrings, white withcraft/good magick and frequent, hot, steamy, descriptive sex, all within an excellent tale.
The tale is about Sir Nick, a Knight who's part of some secret service organisation, who's been tasked with finding out how poison found its way into the food at the court of Queen Victoria, and he starts visiting apothecaries in the city of London. He walks into Shawe's and discovers the wife that he's been searching for for six years working behind the counter, and she's as shocked to see him - and to realise that the attraction between them is as strong as ever; cue many hot, steamy, erotic sex scenes (many of Isabelle's customers are whores, who've shared their experience with her, which makes Nick question what she's been doing in the last six years!).
Nick though that Isabelle left him for another man, but she'd in fact left him because of his frequent and unexplained absences. He couldn't tell her that he'd spent so much time during their marriage away because he was a spy, and as he was the one who'd exposed her crooked father, resulting in his imprisonment and death. Her father had been suspected of poisoning the Court, and now his daughter was possibly to face the same fate...and wife or not, Nick has been tasked with exposing the baddies/killers...
From Isabelle's POV, she'd been left with the MIL from hell, who'd discovered her secret, unknown to even Isabelle til then, and who blackmailed her into fleeing...
I loved how the passion and liking was still between them, and how this made for some excellent sex scenes, but that Isabelle was strong enough, independent enough and assertive enough not to turn to marshmallow afterward their romantic interludes. As far as she was concerned, her husband had never explained his absences and she saw no future for them, especially given her own secrets.
In addition to the above, the tale had an excellent storyline and there were several characters that we saw, and who were shady enough that I couldn't be sure as to the identity of the baddy/ies at all. And, despite not wanting to lose Isabelle again, Nick was even more bound by secrecy and couldn't let on about his work, even when she began to first suspect that he could be the poisoner, and then sussed that he might be investigating the crime, so it was a battle of wills between them.
This was a really good, enjoyable tale, one that I would happily have paid for. It's the first in a series, but each features different characters and storylines and can be read as standalones - I'm interested enough to check them out. This was an excellent find.
I've had this novel on my Kindle for some time but only just got around to reading it. The world building is solid and the writing smooth, though the ending a little predictable.

Having picked this from the free list I was very pleased to find that I found the book very easy to read. I found that the enjoyable story line flowed and the characters were believable. The only fault I would have to say was I felt that the ending could have done with a couple of more chapters just to finish of the story. Yet another introduction to a new author - will certainly read the next story in due course.
