What Readers Say About This Author
* "First time I've read this author's books. She is now on my best seller list! Loved this book!" (Sandra Worley)
* "The writing is well-crafted and nicely paced, and completely enjoyable. A factor I found refreshing, particularly in the mystery thriller genre, was the GOOD and CLEAN nature of the book... Those looking for a "gritty crime drama" won't feel slighted by the lack of foul language and gory details. Similarly, those looking for likeable characters with good morals won't be disappointed... Author Pat Wilpenter handles both with aplomb." (Kristen Taylor)
* "I really enjoyed the storyline; the flow and the pace. It was enough to keep me turning the pages and not put it down!" (Martin Haworth)
The Story Starts
For the newlyweds in the silver Corolla, it was another beautiful day. The afternoon sun was shining brightly through a lightly clouded Queensland sky. The traffic was almost non-existent. And they were in love.
Remembering how fabulous his sweetheart looked in her bikini on the world-famous Gold Coast beach made Jayson smile again. He winked at her as he drove, and she smiled back.
An occasional tourist was heading north to Brisbane and there were a few farmers on the road in their dusty 4 wheel drives. Plus one carefree motorcyclist with the wind billowing his open shirt.
"Man, this is the life, isn't it?" said Jayson as they continued south and watched the endless Aussie bush scenery pass by. "You want to drive?"
"No, thanks. Very happy to be chauffeur driven," she replied, giving him a wink.
"Yes, ma'am. It's my pleasure," said Jayson, enjoying the good-natured banter with Tess. It was one of the many reasons he loved her.
They'd been married just three weeks and life was looking good for them both. Very good, in fact. They both had secure jobs back in the States, with a generous boss who had become a family friend more than an employer. He'd given them a whole month off for their honeymoon in Australia. And they'd just enjoyed an unforgettable week in Jumbuck, a small town in rural Queensland.
"Nice little town, Jumbuck, don't you think?"
"I sure do," she replied, "with nice people. Well, mostly."
"Yes, there was that one unpleasant fellow but he won't be bothering us again."
"True," she said as she remembered what happened.
After a few moments of quiet, Jayson said, "I've got a confession."
She was intrigued. "Oh?"
"Yep. It's been great out here but I am beginning to miss life back in the States."
"Phew, I'm glad that's all. I was hoping you hadn't changed your mind about marrying me," she replied.
"Not a chance, lady. Not one single chance!"
He reached over and rested his hand on her thigh. "You, my darling, are the best thing that's ever happened to me."
An hour after leaving Tenterfield, their joy was shattered. It took just 45 seconds.
