As a Latvian-American, I learned about the history of Latvia in Latvian school as a child, but little about the history of the neighboring Baltic states of Estonia and Lithuania. This well-written book looks at the region from a relatively impartial point of view, and is even available in a Kindle edition!

I started to quickly skim the book when I got it, and was immediately sucked in -- when I looked up, I had been reading for an hour already! This book is general enough for the newcomer to Baltic history, but has plenty of details for those looking for a good intermediate-level book. It'll really help you understand the history of the countries (and many peoples) involved.

This book is a rare find. It gives a comprehensive--but not sketchy--history of the Baltic States from their inception as territories of other powers through to their independence. I was impressed by how quickly I read through it without having to continuously look back to see what I'd forgotten. Each chapter leads logically from the previous. NO CONFUSION!! How's that for a find?
Anyone who wants to add the Baltic Region to their knowledge of history (medieval through modern) needs this book.

This book provides a primer on the history of the Baltics. Although factual, it tends to read more like a text book and provides little in the way of introspective dialogue. Most readers would not find the stilted textbook dialogue entertaining.

This book would be useful for anyone with no background on the Baltics and desiring to obtain a general understanding of the Baltic history. I read it to provide a basic understanding of the Baltics for an upcoming vacation to the Baltics. In my case, at least, it was useful for this purpose. Anyone who wants a more useful book on the post-Communist era will find Laima Vince's "The Snake in the Vodka Bottle", which covers Lithuania's post-Communist era, more colorful and interesting.

On the whole, a masterful pairing of comprehensiveness and readability over the broad canvas of the Baltic States' long history, from paganism through the Tsarist and Soviet occupations, into the 21st century of independence and inclusion into the EU. Kasekamp does an admirable job commenting both on the similarities and the distinctions between Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania. This does result in many chapters where three separate narratives must be juggled and balanced: on the whole, it's handled well, but I do think that creates some unavoidable denseness. Still, highly recommended for anyone wanting to get a basic overview of this region.

Dense but a useful tool if you travel to the Baltics for business or leisure. I learned a great deal about the culture and history of these distinctive countries. Not light reading, but worthwhile. Germany today is conducting a 'soft invasion' using trade and purchase of land and businesses to exert influence in their 'near abroad'. Some German families have history in the Baltic states as nobility, landowners, and businessmen since the 1400's and the Germans sense economic and political opportunities in these sparsely populated lands. And Putin's New Russian Empire looms to the east!
