Kade 21 yrs was desperate for any job, he'd have a month get work or he and mum would be out on the streets. Kade's dreams becoming a lawyer was gone when his father died. Going out on a limb, an office job at Preston Law and Assc was a chance. yah the job interview totally wasn't believable.
Luke 36 yrs needed a PA and wasn't the nicest man (understatement). Running the company along with his sister Kimberley and hubby David and their father. Somehow Kade was given the job and joins the team..
So this book was about Kade Hutchins, a young gay man with an interest in Law, he has to give up his dream of college when his life takes a major hit for the worst after his father gets sick and dies. Months later, and still struggling through his mourning he has odd jobs working as a carpenter, though sporadic work, he is mostly unmotivated and adrift without a purpose and adding emotional turmoil to his sad hurting mother with his lack of drive to find regular work or any kind. She has returned to the world of responsible adults and is working her feet off supporting them. Their existence is tenuous as she is a hardworking waitress in a small family diner. After a few home truths from his mother regarding their dwindling finances Kade realizes how dire their circumstance are heading and at his best friends advice, he applies for a PA position at a local law firm.
Luke Preston, respected and well known lawyer in a respected and well known family business is gay and out, and surrounded by loving family. His mother died from cancer and he is still pained by her death. The emotional loss he endured should have made him completely empathetic towards Kade and way nicer you'd think. Yeah not so much and with his opening conversation with Kade on the phone raising my eyebrows, I could tell he was impatient, driven, angsty and angry, so while I was prepared for him to be ugly for a REAL reason he simply didn't have one.
From what I did read it was clear as mud Luke really had no sound reason to be a douche-canoe and yet he owned the heck out if his ugly behavior. I couldn't bear to finish reading the book simply because he was so irrationally unlikable, so unreasonably angry, so annoyingly rude and cutting and arrogant. Just when I didn't think it could get any worse it did because Kade was hard to reconcile as well. For no particular reason he came across as overly anxious a lot of the time, less snarky than a grown man suffering from douche-canoe boss exposure should be, remained attracted and lust bound by the appearance of Luke even while his sane mind counteracted that attraction by noting the terrible manner his boss had, and unfortunately against all sane beliefs Kade remained a total doormat for the rude, self-centered arrogant attitude from Luke by not really standing up for himself about said behaviour.
Just when I didn't think the book could fail anymore than it did, I was wrong.
Against all rational explanations Kade goes onto to make a declaration in his monologue early in the book that he's fallen in love with Luke (despite all the ongoing douche-canoe behavior) and I was like WT ever-loving Heck? how did that even happen? because seriously folks I could not make the leap between abused employee falling for his revolting boss at all. In fact my astonishment grew in leaps and bounds when Kade made a number of self uttered monologue remarks as to how he continued to be so attracted to Luke given his attitude and I couldn't really agree more. So when Kade fell so fast despite all the sound rational reasons NOT to, I was gobsmacked.
And folks the real mystery here was how that even happened because astonishingly enough the two MC's hadn't even gone horizontal by that stage, so there was no out of this world- inexplicable earth shattering, wall banging lust experience to confuse the reasoning behind mindless emotional declarations.
I'm sorry to say I gave up reading any further after that eye rolling paragraph. So: if your desperate for a free read, try this, if you want something fairly decent perhaps try something else.
For all you enemy-to-lovers fans spare yourself the pain and frustration and skip this one.
Kade is the sweetest, kindest man around, unable to fulfill his desire to go to law school after a sudden illness and the subsequent death of his father. Down on his luck and out of work he applies for a position as Personal Assistant to Luke Preston, the most obnoxious and spoilt man around, unfortunately for Kade he also the gorgeous man he's seen in a long time.
We have to put up with his terrible temper and horrible attitude before we get to meet the man underneath. I don't think we are supposed to like Luke for a long time and this is where L.J gets it right. By the time he admits he's attracted to Kade we are beginning to understand him and like him.
The whole way through Kade keeps his optimistic attitude and friendliness, endearing him to all the other members of Luke's family.
Luke's need for Kade is so strong and yet he denies and fights it but when they make it the sparks fly and boy do they ever!
This really is a one-click book, you won't be disappointed and I know I'm itching to read the next in the series.

Overall, this was a very enjoyable, satisfying and sexy read, with a good plot and well developed characters. Perfect ingredients!
Then he somehow lands the job sans experience or even a resume, meets the rest of the family who works there and immediately his boss' sister is pushing for him and her brother to start dating, even though the brother is completely hostile to his new "assistant." She equates his behavior to a childish bully who behaves that way because he is too immature to react any other way to someone he has a crush on, like pulling pigtails on a playground. Why would anyone encourage a relationship between assistant and boss? Especially starting on the assistant's very first day? That's a good way to crap where you eat and get yourself fired or at least make for an extremely uncomfortable work environment.
Then after a few weeks of the hostile attitude from the boss to the assistant, the assistant suddenly decides he is in love with his boss and when his boss says he doesn't feel the same way, the assistant forces a kiss on the boss in public then goes nuts on him when he feels rejected. Supposedly this makes the boss decide he must get roaring drunk and complain to his sister that the assistant walked out on him? I don't know ...
Anyway, after a heart to heart between the assistant and the sister, she decides to have him work manual labor at a LGBT youth facility that their law firm owns or something, doing renovations? I don't really understand this part, but even though the assistant works for her brother and is supposedly the only assistant they have hired in a really long time that can put up with the brother's hateful attitude, she is going to pull him away from his real job, hire a temp to replace him at the office and send him to this youth center to dig gardens ... for weeks.
I don't know, there is a lot of tearful confrontations between the boss and the assistant, a mutual (through a door) j/o session and then a heartfelt discussion on why the boss is such a jerk. After that, when you think that ok, I guess a romance will begin, the boss goes BACK to being a jerk because he just can't help himself apparently and the writer needed more angst since all of this happened in the first 39% of the book!
Anyway, the story continues in this manner. The boss keeps running hot and cold, even in his own mind. The assistant keeps doing things that no real assistant would do and the family and friends on both sides keep pushing things to the edge in a way I've never read about, seen or experienced! All in all, in order to get through this story, you need to suspend belief in the world WE live in and just give in to the topsy turvy completely unbelievable world that this author created.
