Product Description

My first memory was of a slap, hard across the face: the sting on my cheek and the jarring of my bones as I slammed back into my bed. It was my dad who had hit me.
I had been four.
Most of my memories were much of the same and no one ever saw, no one ever fought to help, no one ever cared.
Then we moved.
My new neighbor cared, rescued the twelve-year-old I had been from a beating. Always thought I'd suffer the nightmare alone, I was wrong.
Mace Donati saved me that day in all the ways a person could be saved.
And his daughter, Mia, she became the friend I had always wanted, my conscience when my own faltered, the light that led me home when I had lost my way.
The girl who grew into the only woman I would ever love.
But when you realize you're more like your father than the good people who took you in and gave you a home, the only way to return their kindness is to let them go.
I let them go, got so far lost in the shadows I couldn't remember who I was anymore. Mia never gave up on me. She fought for me, kept the light on so I'd find my way back.
And when I did, life threw us a curveball. I had to hurt Mia in order to save her.
But when my past comes back to haunt me and I almost lose her, I'm ready to fight for her...fight to find a way back into her heart while keeping the demons from my past from finishing what they started.

This is a good read about a person who's come good from a bad start and meets the right person and works out well for both of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kleenex Required, It's A Tearjearker 10 February 2016
By Avid Reader Amy's Reviews - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
**ARC provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.**

Cole and Mia are complete opposites. Mia represents everything light in the world and Cole represents the dark. They are basically from opposite sides of the tracks but literally grew up next door to each other. Their relationship takes place over a course of years in this book. You see them grow from being friends to lovers. Cole's life has never been easy. Growing up with an abusive father, he has become accustomed to his life of darkness. Then the day came when Mia's father Mace came to his rescue. Cole finally got to see what it's like to be cared about and to be a part of a real family. Circumstances change Cole's life forever. The boy he was becoming under Mia and Mace's care is no more. In his place is someone who believes he is like his father. Time passes but Mia never loses hope that she'll get Cole back in her life. Her stubbornness pays off and Cole comes back but keeps his distance. Just when things are going good, the corruption of the town lands on their doorstep. Tragedy strikes and Mia and Cole are left devastated. Life gets dangerous for them and Cole wants to keep his distance to keep her safe. Mia proves to him that he is worth the chance and they find their way back to each other.

Tearjerker doesn't even begin to cover the feelings that this book brings. Will you cry? Yes you will. Will you get so mad and frustrated at the book? Yes you will. It's all worth it when it comes to this story. Never had I read a book before that left me feeling so many emotions on a constant repeat throughout the book. I loved it.

Fiore proves herself to be a fantastic writer with this book. The writing is superb. She is able to pull the reader in and never let them go. She keeps you on your toes and you never know what's around the corner. It's not very often you can read a book and go "Dang. She can write."

If you're looking for a suspense/thriller with romance, this is the book for you. If you're looking for some insta-love romance, well this isn't for you. This is a dark and gritty story that proves there is always light within the dark. Ha! Like my play on words?

5.0 out of 5 stars Fluttering Hearts Review 10 February 2016
By Peyton @A Bookish Mess - Published on
This kind of book is right up my alley - so I can say with complete absolution that I enjoyed this novel so much more than I thought I would!

L.A. Fiore has a way of writing novels that bring out every single emotion you have, and even some you had no idea you were capable of feeling. I can honestly say that I have never read a novel that gave me that kind of glimpse into one of their characters past. There have been details, yes - but I literally felt my heart BREAK for this little boy. She wrote this story in such a way that it reached inside my chest, grabbed my heart and held onto it from beginning to end.

Cole is a light in the dark himself. His past is clouded with abuse and a father who never cared. Mace is the person who gave him hope. Showed him that there is more out that than someone who gets his kicks from beating a child. He showed him just what having a family SHOULD feel like and taught him that life is worth living, when lived the right way. Mia is Mace's daughter and the two of them become, in Cole's eyes - everything that is good in his life.

Things begin to chance when Mia turns 16 and Cole really begins to notice her. He plays it smart in some ways, understanding that the age thing is an issue and she is 100% off limits. In his mind, the biggest issue to overcome is the fact that he feels he doesn't deserve someone like her. Mia is his light - the very thing that helps him make it through his struggles and grow to be the complete opposite of the man his father ways. Which made walking away that much harder. Watching (literally, in my head) Cole walk away from Mace and Mia was one of the hardest parts of this book for me. It was an ugly cry kind of moment.

Mia isn't having it. She throws his leaving in his face and stays right there demanding answers. She isn't willing to accept that he could just walk away from them - his family. These two characters were so beautifully written that I don't think I found one single thing that could have been written differently! Cole felt he was doing what was right to save the people he loved the most in the world. Mia and Mace were not ready to give him up just yet and throughout the way, Cole learns that some things are worth fighting for - no matter how hard that fight is going to be. When he finally caves to Mia - it's the most heartwarming feeling I think I have had throughout this entire book. Even though we KNOW it was coming, nothing prepared me for his complete show of all emotions he has felt this entire time.

This story would also not have been as good without the side characters. Really, they are just as main as Cole himself. I LOVED the character of Mace. I think this book would have been less as amazing if he was written in a smaller part. It really helped show us how Cole turned into the man he did. I would recommend this novel to anyone who would listen to me talk about it. L.A. Fiore has a fan for life in me and I look forward to each and every novel she puts out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Phenomenally Good 9 February 2016
By Anne Milne - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
Wow just wow. The story spans years and it is done brilliantly, it's easy to follow and flows naturally through the years that it spans. The characters are some of my fav of the year so far, I want Mace to be my dad, I loved him, he's a strong loving supportive single dad to Mia who we first meet as a young girl. When Cole comes into their lives eveything changes for all of them, the dynamics of his relationship with Mace is just perfect and together with Mia they form an unbreakable bond. The story is dark in places it's got a little bit of everything I look for in a book, good guys, really bad guys, betrayal, redemption, loyalty and love. Give this book a read you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars "You play Jekyll and Hyde better than Jekyll and Hyde." 9 February 2016
By Rosa Sharon - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
I've been a fan of this author for years. Her book, Beautifully Damaged, made a big impression on me when I first entered the 'book world' and found a home there. Many books have followed, but that one stayed with me. For that reason, she's on my auto-click list. If she writes it, I'll read it, and I'm never disappointed. She always manages to bring out my emotions, forcing me to raise my eye brows, drop my jaw, flex my fighting fist, and fan my heated cheeks while pulling my heart strings. Every. Single. Time.

His Light in the Dark took me all the way back to Cole's childhood. The darkness seen through the eyes of a child is heartbreaking. I wanted to reach through the pages of my kindle and rescue him myself. I knew that Mace was coming, because I had read the synopsis, but I was tempted to fast forward and find him so I could drag his ass back a few chapters. If it was possible for a reader to commit book character homicide, I'd be in literary lock-up
I first met Mia when she was being "adorable and ridiculous" , obsessed with princesses and sparkly shoes. Her daddy was her hero and he treated her like a princess. Since her life was so full of love, she had plenty to share with the boy next door. She saw his sadness and made it her goal to make him smile. And she did.

Mace & Mia were everything good in his life. Actually, the only good. When the darkness caught up to him, overtaking his life again, he had to let them go. They had done so much for him, he couldn't take them down with him. He had to hurt them, to save them. "He was determined to protect her, even from himself."

Mia was his light. He tried to distance himself from her, but she wouldn't let him. She never gave up, hoping that he would come back to her. While he wouldn't share his thoughts with her , he shared them with me. He let me inside his head where he was thinking to himself that, "I had feared that if she spent too much time with me my darkness would snuff out her light." I tried to convince him otherwise, but he was very stubborn. He couldn't see the good in himself that Mace, Mia, and I did. So, he broke our hearts… again . Taking us on an emotional roller coaster, he struggled to reclaim his life. But would that life include the people that became his family of choice, instead of blood? Would he ever be convinced that he had something to offer, something other than trouble. Would the passion that sparked between Cole & Mia ever be fulfilled? Would they ever share with each other the things that they shared with me? Would I have any nails left by the end of the book if they didn't? Can a reader die from the sexual tension between book characters? Does Amazon sell kindle covers that squirt water to cool down the reader? If not, they should. If they ever do, you read it here first.

5.0 out of 5 stars What great and imaginative writing 10 February 2016
By Carolyn - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
Total WOW! What great and imaginative writing.

This book is written in four sections. The first section is the introduction of the characters and the traumatic beginnings of Cole due an abusive father. Being taken in by neighbors, the father daughter duo of Mace and Mia, Cole is shown what true family is and what it means to have unconditional love and support. Mia is the princess! Truly adored by her dad and in return she is an adoring personality. Mace is the hunky father with love and patience for his daughter that he freely gives to Cole. But don't mess with Mace! Cole has suffered great trauma from his father and has the emotional and physical scars to prove it.

The book spans many years and there are so many things that happen within this book that I not only fell in love with the characters and the writing, but was mad, scared, pissed and wondering why am I putting myself through this read.

BUT the dramatics, suspense, romance, and holy WOW!!

There are many stories that I think yes I want to read that one again. But this book I want me to read it again like NOW! I can't really talk about it enough to explain the what or the whys because nothing in this book should be given away. It really was excellently written!
