I recently moved out to AZ and I really enjoy hiking. I came from NH. In NH we are spoiled because the AMC writes a series of guides that are a must have. The guides include large fold out trail maps and just about everything you'd want to know.
This guide is less a true hiking guide and more of a reference. It provides a nice overview of some of the best hikes in AZ, but you'll need to do additional research to really know what you are undertaking.
Every hike has a quick overview of the basics like water access, mileage, hiking time, and difficulty. There are also some basic maps for each hike and some photos for select hikes.
What this guide is missing is the detail. For example, the Bright Angle Trail is over 7 miles long and has an amazing number of stops, sights, and details. This book has about two paragraphs on it. That is no where near enough information to prepare a hike on that trail. You REALLY need to do additional research on any trail listed in this book, if you want to be safe.
All in all, this is a great book to use to get some ideas of hikes to plan. Use it as a starting point, and then do your research via websites and apps like Alltrails.
