Sine and Finlay

Sine is the daughter of the laird. She doesn’t like staying in the castle so often escapes her guards and goes roaming by herself. On one occasion she is set upon by some brigands.
Finlay was raised by a lovely woman after he had been found nearly dead in the forest. When he hears the screams on a woman he comes to the rescue.
After taking Sine back to the castle he is given the task of guarding Sine.

This is the first time I have read a book by this author.
Although the plot was a little predictable I quite enjoyed reading it.

An easy story to read, nice short and sweet, without repetition. I enjoyed the extended epilogue as well, and interested to know who Nora is.

We meet Finley as a young man, enjoying his favorite place, the forest at the border of Duncan land. This day, he wasn't to remain alone in the woods. He heard a scream and recognized it as a woman in trouble, so dropping the wood he had collected for Mairi, he ran to her aid. There he met Sine Duncan. She was being set upon by three brigands and could not fight them off herself. Finley dispatched the first man quickly and the other two decided that they didn't want to fight him over a lass and ran away. He took Sine home, to ensure her safety, and was offered a position by Laird Duncan of being her guard. It seemed she had a love for going off on her own and no fear of getting into trouble by doing that. He took it on as there seemed to be little choice in the matter. The two young people took a liking to each other, but Sine's stubbornness didn't stop her from still getting into the occasional disagreement with Finley. Over time and with many trips into the town, they became companionable. They would shop and Sine would help some of the shopkeepers with some gold she had taken from the Laird. They also would go to the healer's place and help the poor and the sick with him. They became quite friendly in an argumentative way. The story carries on with love, many disagreements, and lots of excursions until the Laird decided that Sine should marry the Laird Craig to merge the two clans together. Thus began the real story behind Finley's appearance in the woods.There is stories of deceit, murder, imprisonment, death and survival. Twists and turns abound. I really enjoyed the love scenes, the fighting scenes, and the battle that ensued instead of the wedding that had been arranged. A totally delicious story, I will look for more from this author for sure.

In the new era of social distancing, we find relevance in many stories - particularly one such as this. This novel is a tale of lives lost, children adrift, and a gradual restoration of love, honor, family, and clan.

It just so happens that our hero in this story practiced social distancing, albeit in a raw, medieval form. Ousted by his clan and cast adrift at a young age, Finley was lucky to land on the lonely farm of a single woman who ended up mothering and raising him to be loyal, brave, and hardworking.

Our heroine, by contrast, was raised in luxury, in a foreboding castle, which lacked love and where matters of political gain, wealth and power accumulation were foremost in her family. Despite great adversity, Sine manages to develop warmth and empathy, paired with a healthy dose of selfish disdain for her family's rules of conduct for a laird's daughter.

Love and respect grow between the unlikely pair. When the couple's secrets are revealed, a clash to determine the fates of two clans come to a reckoning. I thoroughly enjoyed practicing a few hours of social distancing with this medieval story. It was a great pleasure to read this new effort. I recommend it!
