Product Description

Scotland, 1642. Maggie and Lachlan must fight their growing attraction, battling suspicion and intrigue as religious and political turmoil threaten to tear their clans apart.

He has sworn he will never marry.

Lachlan Cameron is honor bound to see a wounded lass to safety, although he has well learned women are deceivers, and this lovely maid harbors a wealth of secrets. But Maggie's free spirit and charms enthrall him while he works to discover if she is innocent…or a spy scheming with his enemies to destroy his clan.

She has sworn she will never fall in love.

Maggie Murray fled her home to avoid a political marriage to an abusive man. Salvation comes when the Cameron laird, unaware of her identity, protects her as she escapes. His kindness slowly warms her, and she’s tempted to confess her real name. But his strong sense of honor would force him to return her to her father…and torment at the hands of her scorned betrothed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good start to what looks to be an fun series. 4 October 2016

A firmly rounded up 4.5. Highland Deception was a fun romp, with good descriptive prose bringing the sights, sounds and brawniness of the highlands to life. There was, of course, the predictable tension brought about by numerous misunderstandings, but none of it was overly prolonged as happens so frequently in romance. Maggie and Lachlan both have secrets they believe more important than their growing infatuation for each other, but the HEA gods intervene in a timely manner, allowing them to finally admit and share their unexpected love. Ms. Bailey dropped interesting hints throughout the novel of characters who might appear in a subsequent volume, and I took the bait and am eager to find out just what happened between Lachlan's sister and his best friend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Recommend, recommend, recommend 23 December 2016

Wow...I was blown-away. I learned about Lori through a virtual Facebook party and loved that she had the first chapter available to read. That my friend is what hooked me! Her vivid writing easily drew me into the story. I personally love when a good author writes and you don't just read the words...you live the words. It's a picture painted on paper, but it feels like real life and that you're the main character in the novel. I love that Lori's chapters are true chapters rather than the shorter chapters often seen today with e-readers. There are so many climatic points that it keeps you on edge while wishing and hoping for the perfect outcome! For me a great book is one that you try to read every available free moment and one that you fall asleep and dream about and wake up eager to pick-up where you left off. This is that type of book! Filled with a woman's Highland warrior laird, the reader easily becomes Maggie and just as easily falls in love with Laird Lachlan Cameron. My only sadness is that I have to wait for Lori to make another one of her works available to read! Highly recommend my new favorite author! She won't leave you disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars lovely 12 September 2016

I enjoyed Highland Deception and I am looking forward to more books in the series. Our heroine Maggie was pretty wonderful and it was her character that drew me into the story. She was witty, beautiful, tenacious and easy to fall in love with. Which was what our hero did despite his misgivings and the hurt and betrayal he had suffered in the past because of a woman. The attraction between Maggie and Lachlan developed nicely, it was believable, very sweet yet sensual. The overall plot was good, richly woven with history and beautiful description of the highlands. The romance was sweet and wonderful, and I am truly eager to read more from this author.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some issues, but good Scotland representation 2 September 2016

“Highland Deception” is the debut of author, Lori Ann Bailey, and is the first in her Highland Pride series. As a fan of all things Scotland, I was predisposed to like this book although, while Bailey does a great job with her debut, it was a tale of two cities for me.

The Story- Maggie is set to marry a rapist/murderer/real jerk, so she decides to run away and join a nunnery. On the road, she unwittingly falls in with a group of men from another clan while showcasing her healing skills. Fearing that they will return her to her fate, she refuses to tell them who she is, which is a problem for their leader, Lachlan. Lachlan falls for her; conflicts arise.

My Thoughts- This story began with a bang and hooked me immediately. Unfortunately, as soon as they arrive at Lachlan’s castle about halfway through, it felt like the story began to flail and random conflicts arose here and there which seemed like an attempt to add drama. I also took issue with the idea that a priest’s niece could be bedded and discarded with no issue. I didn’t swoon over the hero like I normally do when they are wearing kilts, and I think it’s because he did not treat her much better than the other men in her life. I did identify with Maggie, which could be why I took her mistreatment to heart.

The Good- Maggie is a great character: brave, kind, a woman who thinks for herself. The sex scenes and preceding build-up scenes were very hot and well-written. The Scottish brogue is just enough to hear the music of the language, but not over-done in a way that makes it difficult to read. The setting is perfectly described and makes you want to be in Scotland yesterday. The initial conflict and set-up is intriguing and captivating.

The Bottom Line- If you like stories set in Scotland, this is definitely one to pick up as it does a great job of bringing the history, culture and setting into the story instead of just plopping some random story down and saying that it’s Scotland and the hero wears a kilt and calls her “Lassie”. I had some issues with story toward the end and the hero, but it isn’t enough to keep me from recommending this book and looking forward to more from this author. 3 stars

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun Highland Romance! 6 March 2017

This was a very enjoyable Highland Romance. I was pulled into the story from the first page and was kept enthralled throughout the entire novel. Maggie and Lachlan were such great characters. I loved how spirited Maggie was despite being controlled by her overbearing father. She was a beautiful and enigmatic woman. Lachlan couldn't help but fall for this lovely lass despite his being hurt in the past. The chemistry between these two was palpable and sparks definitely flew between them. The historic details added depth to the plot and I could easily picture the scenes. I am eager to read what Lori Ann Bailey has in store for us next!
