High Tops

Later, when she thought about it, Laura would realise that she and Dan had both made the same assumption, that the ghost was a girl. There was no real reason for this. If pressed, she might have said that it was the yellow Converse that did it. In Laura’s experience, 4th Grade boys did not wear yellow Converse. Black and blue certainly, and red and green might also be acceptable. But yellow?

Without a word, Schultz made his may over to what remained of Kellerman and, with no little difficulty, dragged the corpse to the edge of the roof. Somehow managed to manhandle the great bulk out over the balustrade and push the body out past the tipping point. Schultz delivered a fine salute, heel snap and all, as it plummeted to the courtyard below, then he strolled back to join the others.

Cub

He wasn't sure exactly what he expected to find, but he did expect to find something. A swatch of coarse brown fur caught on the sharp corner of the tall chest of drawers. A splotch of forest dirt revealing a partial paw-print in the corner of the room. Score marks on the wooden bars of the cot, widely spaced enough that they might, just might have been left by claws. But there were none of these things. There was only the stuffed bear in the cot, it's body tucked tightly under the blue flannel blanket leaving the head poking out. A head that stared at him with dead, black eyes.

Forever

As he stared at me a thin trail of drool escaped the corner of his twisted mouth. I rose from my chair at his bedside and loomed over him noticing as I did so the dim light reflected in his eyes. I would like to say I saw fear there as I brought the pillow down on his face, but if it was anything it was satisfaction. Even as I smothered the life out of him I was convinced I could hear him laughing.

Devil May Care

After fetching the man his drink McCready headed behind the bar to the windowless, urine yellow cupboard he called an office. Before he placed the pouch in the small floor safe under the desk he checked the contents out of habit. Five stones wrapped in wax paper.

Playtime

He used the scope to sweep the rest of the area confident that he could pick his target up again when he needed to. He worked slowly from left to right but could see no one else and there was nowhere to hide save for the houses themselves which would put them somewhere behind his target if there was anyone else at all. That was good. That was manageable. But it wasn’t enough. From the attack on the compound onwards he had seen how they planned, how they prepared, how they organised and hunted in packs. He couldn’t remember seeing one on it’s own like this before. He kept his rifle raised with his left hand and with his right he removed the pistol from the shoulder holster. Without looking he spoke to his daughter.
