However I should have known there would be nothing typical about this book because its Alessandra Torre after all! Her lateral mind is incredible and the way she weaves a story both captivates and pushes my boundaries.
Now, that being said, the writing is always excellent. She’s a talented writer, and she is the master of weaving a storyline to keep the reader guessing where she’ll take them next.
So, true to form, “Hidden Seams” was a utterly unique story that I never saw coming, stretched the limits of my comfort zone and one I couldn't put down until the final swipe.
I mean let’s just start with the premise of this book... a straight man, leading the life of a gay man, standing by his “partner” for 10 years, who is about to inherit a fashion empire upon his partner’s death. When out of the blue a potential heir comes into play and the entire house of cards looks like it could come crashing down...
‘Hidden Seams’ is a little out there, truth be told. It's a wild, far fetched, unpredictable ride while still being fun And uniquely romantic. It's a bit crazy but in the best ways. The characters were fantastic, the dialogue fast paced, witty and well timed and the intensity fierce. ‘Hidden Seams’ is quirky and sexy and uniquely Alessandra Torre. I really adored it.
Avery was adopted and never knew her real father. When she sees images of Marco's dead boss on screen in news about his death, she recognises him from the one photo she had of her father. So she requests a dna test. She has no interest in his millions, but just desperately wants to know whether or not he's her real dad.
Marco is taken aback at the contact from this random woman who seems to be trying to muscle in on his inheritance. And the story proceeds from there.
Once you get over the weirdness of Marco's background, the storyline is OK. Some of the explicit scenes were a little OTT for me (even for Alessandra Torre LOL). But I did have some questions about Avery's character.
Avery seems to be a good-hearted woman who runs a large company that supports newly arrived Russian immigrant women, assisting them with accommodation and work, and helping them avoid exploitation. All fine and laudable. But.... Avery also seems to be involved with organised crime in Detroit, and some rather shady tax evasion manoeuvres that don't reflect well on her. I was uncomfortable with that.
I also didn't like the ridiculous level of luxury of Marco's (and later Avery's) lives. Who needs a servant to bring their dental floss on a silver tray? Come on, guys.......
So yeah, I had some reservations about this book. I've really enjoyed some of Ms Torre's other books, but IMO this wasn't her best.
The characters, Marco and Avery are so dynamic together. I loved Marco and all his flaws. Even though he could and was and a****** at times he was loved. He would and did anything for the people he loved. I really liked Avery and the tenacity that she bought to the story. She stayed true to herself and wasn't swayed by what she could have had.
Ms Torre definitely excelled herself with this story and characters. I didn't want it to end.

Marco is one hell of an interesting character. The more I know about him, the more I want to know. So many layers.
Avery is similar in her complexity. Totally driven, unafraid and with a core of goodness that runs through her, even when making seemingly bad decisions.
The supporting characters add flesh to the bones of a really good story. Everything about it seems purposeful, necessary and of value.
I can’t recommend this book enough. Great characters, interesting plot lines and a reveal that I didn’t see coming. Definite 5 star read.
