Warning: rape, not graphically described, is part of this story.
This is book 5 in the McRaes series. Amanda and Will. Will was mentioned in the first book-12 Days.
Amanda is a former American ambassador's daughter, trust fund do-gooder. Will is hard knocks, the result of foster care and an on again off again mother, no dad in sight. He was almost adopted into the McRae family but the courts returned him to his I can't get it together mom over and over again. Fast forward 18 years. Will is a Navy SEAL and Amanda is a teacher in an African country. After rebels attack and take hostage teachers, students and Amanda, Will is sent in to rescue Amanda. Even though Amanda saves her students, she, unfortunately, Amanda has been raped, beaten and traumatized before Will can get to her. He stays with her though her exams and rape kit and resulting medical needs. A bond is formed but Amanda can't remember much.
This story is really about what happens afterwards, how they first learn to heal themselves and then each other. It involves trust, love, family and the will to survive and move on. They are both strong characters in their own way with human flaws and needs. A very satisfying read. As a bonus, the reader also gets caught up with the lives of the other members of the McRae family, especially Sam and Rachel, the foundation of the family.
All the books in this series are great!
