5.0 out of 5 stars ... M's books for several years now and am in love with her other series 6 August 2015
By Sheri Bishop - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
I've been reading M's books for several years now and am in love with her other series, Neighborly Affections. I was scared going into this book that it wouldn't be as good.

But this book, Her Shirtless Gentleman, was amazing!! Rob and Nora are an amazing couple. Not only are they fantastic together but they are wonderful as separate characters.

Nora is only several months out of a particularly nasty marriage and divorce and doesn't trust her dating instincts. After all, she married her first boyfriend so she's not really had any practice dating. But she's putting herself out there, unfortunately, it's with the 20-somethings she works with and they're taking her to those meat market bars we all hate. But lucky for her, one Friday night, she gets thrown up on and her life is changed forever.

Rob has known for many years now he wants to settle down and do the whole marriage/children thing. But alas, he just hasn't met that woman he connects with, until that Friday night he's out with the guys. One look at Nora and he knows, he knows she is the one. But he discovers her history and realizes he must treat her with a little old fashioned courting. And he does! And what happens is true magic.

But while we're watching them become a couple, we also get to watch Nora become a strong woman, confident in herself and her sexuality. We get to watch Rob who is finally allowed to focus his love, his protectiveness, and his strength on that one special woman. So we get to watch them grow individually and together. It really is a special story that M has written for us.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dating After Divorce 5 August 2015
By Book Gannet - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
This is a sweet and sexy read with plenty of life after divorce vibes and an unexpectedly tender romance. Although it’s described as erotica, it’s definitely on the milder side of that genre, because although there’s plenty of raunchy thoughts right from the start, the actual relationship between Rob and Eleanora grows at a steady pace.

I really liked Eleanora. She’s a shy woman who’s only ever been with one man and has suddenly found herself thrust back into the dating scene in her early thirties, after ten years of marriage to a worthless man. The trouble is the only friends she has to go out with are in their twenties and their style of dating really doesn’t suit her. Eleanora is a numbers girl, she likes things straight forward and simple and she’s not used to flirting or putting herself out there. Add in the emotional battering she’s been subjected to throughout her marriage, and her confidence is non-existent at the start of this book.

Then along comes Rob. I loved how he treated Eleanora and also how serious he is about her from the moment they meet. He’s a man who knows what he wants – and it’s a lot more than flirting, dates and a quick hook up. The way he rebuilds her confidence, listens to what she wants and essentially takes their dating back to their teenage years is just adorable. He’s also hot, strong and protective, which doesn’t hurt, but he also gives her back the power she’s been missing for ten years and helps her find her own strengths once more.

Of course it’s not all plain sailing thanks to that jerk of an ex Eleanora has hanging around, but on the whole this is a sweet read with added heat to keep things ticking along. If you’re an erotica fan you might find this a little tame for your tastes, but if you like your romance with plenty of spice along with the sweet, then this could be for you. Especially if you like characters who have a few relationship battle scars and an honorable guy who isn’t afraid to go after what he wants, white picket fence and all, and likewise isn’t worried about taking his time over doing so. This is my first book by this author, but I’m pretty sure it won’t be my last.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hot and Sweet! 6 August 2015
By Delphina - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
The magic of first love is so amazing and yet seems to be relegated to our youth, especially in books. I think what I loved about this book beyond the super yummy gentleman, Rob was that this book had that same feel. The magic of first true love. They might be in their thirties, but the butterflies and hand holding and making out at the drive in were all there. Rob was, as the title indicates, a gentleman, a scortching hot gentleman at that. Nora was the divorcee who quickly found a place in his heart. It was so fun and I read it in one sitting. Okay, I forgot to get a good night's sleep that night, but it was so worth it.
I love this authors Neighborly Affection series and devour anything of hers I can get my hands on, so when I saw this offered for review I was super excited. This is just as hot and intelligent as her menage series, but with a completely different feel. I am looking forward to more books from this series. This book stands alone.
4.0 out of 5 stars Her Shirtless Gentleman 1 October 2015

I really enjoyed reading Her Shirtless Gentleman - and the way the book gets its title is just too darn cute ... like a lot of the book actually. Eleanora is out of an emotionally abusive marriage, really insecure but hoping she is ready to start dating again. But it has been so long she isn't sure of the rules anymore and her confidence is severely dented, thanks to her husband.. She's also out there with younger women, coworkers who really aren't anything like her, so they aren't exactly on the same page when it comes to looking for men. Luckily for her, because of unfortunate circumstances she's thrown together with the absolutely awesome (and gentlemanly) Rob.

Rob is in his mid-30s & way past flings and Eleanor is just the kind of woman he can see himself spending the rest of his life with. Because she's still dealing with issues from her marriage, though, he has to take it slow and put a lot of thought into wooing her ... which he does beautifully. His dates show imagination and care and that he pays attention to the woman he's with. I loved it! We could all be so lucky :)

If I have any complaints, it is with Rob actually. As wonderful as he is, I think that he comes off just a little desperate for a wife. If it had just been Eleanor that he was like that with then I would be OK with it, but he mentions that some of his previous relationships ended because he started talking marriage too quickly. I've got nothing against a man who is interested in commitment, but that just didn't sit all that well with me. But it was minor and the only thing I had a problem with so it was easy to get over.

Sweet and full of emotion, Her Shirtless Gentleman gives readers a uplifting story about a woman discovering herself again and the man who supports her while she finds her confidence.

5.0 out of 5 stars Down-home Romeo Removes Shirt; Romance Ensues 5 August 2015

Format: Kindle Edition
Fans of M. A. Barber’s Neighborly Affection series might wonder where the other guy is, but never fear! Nora and Rob generate plenty of steam for a whole bed-full.

Unlike Barber’s bestselling Neighborly Affection books, this one stands alone and starts her new Gentleman series. It’s a great start, let me tell you. I was hooked from the beginning by a level-headed career woman I could relate to and a hero who finds her attractive for all the right reasons.

Nora’s divorce has freed her from a man-sized lump of emotionally abusive, cheating, manipulative refuse. It has also left her with low expectations of men. She wants to date again but doesn’t have the experience or confidence to navigate the choppy waters of singleness. Readers who love a vulnerable woman will love Nora, but she will not disappoint readers who love a strong woman. Even in her lack of confidence, she has a boldness about her that rings with strength.

Enter Rob, who comes to the rescue when a drunk bar-goer barfs on Nora. Rob whips off his shirt so she can change out of her ruined blouse, and the sight of his hard-but-not-obscenely-ripped abs jump starts her sex drive. Rob is just as attracted to Nora as she is to him. Despite all her wariness about entering into a new relationship after her last and only, Rob turns out to be the gentleman antithesis to her lousy ex.

Rob has the patience, sweetness, and genuineness to coax Nora’s petals out of their tight, protective furl. Am I speaking figuratively or literally? You’ll have to pick this one up to find out. *winks salaciously*

Reading Barber is always fun for the steam factor. But I also find this author so refreshing for her unique author voice. I especially love how she writes in deep point of view so I can revel in the characters’ heads and really get to know them from the inside out.

Other elements of Barber’s voice that I love include her widely varied sentence structures, internals that are absolutely true to her characters, and her leisurely pacing that allows the story to unfold at a rate that compliments the growth of character.

You’ll want to curl up with a glass of wine or another favorite beverage and sip this story slowly. Read some of Barber’s amazing descriptions twice. Highlight your favorite passages to be re-read later. And most of all, lose yourself in Nora’s transformation from emotionally stunted divorcee to confident girlfriend under Rob’s tender assault of patience and gentleness.

Here are a few of the passages I adored enough to savor over and over again:

Her body jangled like a change jar spilling on tile.—Kindle Location 99.

She might embarrass easily, but she powered through it with courage and sass.—Kindle Location 465.

"All I can do is show up every day and demonstrate the kind of man I am. Make some new pathways here.” He tapped Nora’s forehead with a gentle finger.—Kindle Location 792.

The hours slipped by to the tune of the radio’s Christmas marathon under an unbroken dome of dull gray clouds.—Kindle Location 2572

If you like a strong, intelligent author voice, great writing, relatable characters, and a sweet story, You Gotta Read M. Q. Barber’s Her Shirtless Gentleman.
