Product Description

On the eve of her wedding, Lacey Roberts uncovers a problem too large for love to conquer: a killer gene running through her family’s bloodline, which could put her fiancé, Evanston (Evs) Brighton, in danger.
Lacey vows to uncover the secrets of her lineage, even if it requires her ultimate sacrifice: the loss of her marriage to her beloved Evs.
Her search leads from southern Arizona to the North Carolina Smoky Mountain backwoods, where the shotgun is more respected than the law, and family may not be what is expected.
HEIR OF DECEIT is set in an area where, even today, hands of tobacco are used as currency and moonshine stills explode.
Lacey encounters a crass and stringy backwoods aunt; a moonshiner uncle; an alluring Cherokee firefighter; a sprinkling of Asheville’s famous ghosts; and a deliciously horrible bad guy in her desperate quest to wed her tough-as-barbed-wire fiancé, Evs, a rancher from Tubac, Arizona.

I won't go into the plot--that has already been revealed in other places. This is part love story, part genealogical mystery, a little bit about redemption and quite a lot of fun for the reader. The heroine is likeable and shows integrity, independence and courage without being super woman. She is impulsive, makes errors in judgment, learns and grows, and her story drew me in quickly and held my attention to the end. There is humor, as well as tension, which is pretty much how life happens. As someone mentioned, parts of the story do feel condensed. I would love to see this expanded, with more detail about the lives of the characters, but there is enough back story to explain the situation. I did not find myself thinking, "huh? where did that come from?" I would also like a little more explanation of the hero's finances. The only ranchers I know with that kind of cash are ranching for love of the lifestyle while their real money rolls in from oil wells or previously acquired fortunes. That, however, is a very personal quibble. I liked this book enough to want a sequel, to find out where all of these characters go in the future. I recommend this book for anyone looking for an intriguing, enjoyable evening with people you will be glad you met and want to meet again.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ! 30 April 2015

Heir of Deceit captures your interest from the beginning and won’t let it go. It’s a fun read. It has touches of humor, a comical murder weapon, and plot twists that keep you guessing to the satisfying end.

Characters such as moonshiner Fergus and his prickly shotgun-toting sister Ruthella make this book come alive. There’s Evs, Lacey’s tough fiancé; a clueless villain; and a Cherokee who tries to win Lacey’s heart.

The descriptions of the Smoky Mountains are right on, with kudzu that takes over everything, local legends, and Cherokee heritage.

When Lacey Roberts suspects she may have inherited a family trait that causes the women in her family to murder their husbands, she sets out to uncover the truth, even if it means that she must give up her dream of marrying her fiancé, Evs. She ends up in Asheville, North Carolina with mountain relatives who don’t appreciate her snooping around.

Getting to know her relatives reveals facts Lacey didn’t want to know. In her efforts to expose what is wrong with her family, she discovers what is right with them, too. Romance plus intrigue make this book more than just another love story.

Woven throughout the book is the story of Lacey's parents, which enriches the story and endears Lacey to the reader.

Once I began reading Heir of Deceit I couldn't put it down. The story has so many twists with a surprise at every turn, The vividness of her writing makes the scenery visual and the characters real. The dialog is well written and believable. The humorous undertones placed through out the story kept a subject that well could have been dark from becoming depressive. Thoroughly enjoyed my time with Lacey and her journey and look forward to the next book from Jan Martin.

I read this book because I knew the author when she was growing up. We had the same 6th Grade Arizona History teacher. This is not the usual genre that I read but the story got me quickly and I couldn't put it down . I plan to loan my Kindle to my wife so she can read it and I know she'll love it too. G Smith
