Okay, I actually read this book the minute it hit release day, and I sat up all night until I was done. At the conclusion, I was going to leave a positive review like my previous ones, ( because come on folks this series deserves positive reviews- its so damn good) but I saw all the drama (listed as 1 star reviews) about publisher issues, civil disputes etc, that i wasn't even sure I should leave a review.
Like most dedicated Klune fans I pre-ordered this book, way, way back last year. The pre-order fell through, but when it re-released for another pre-order I clicked that baby ASAP. It basically took until now for me to decide to leave a review, and I do so, simply because Klune's story-telling is so, so, so damn good, its a crime to NOT leave a review. The man is hands down, no word of a lie, brilliant and I'll happily sing that tune from any rooftop.
That being said, as a major fan of TJ Klune, and die-hard Green Creek fan (Ox- so swoon worthy), I was chafing at the bit for this latest installment of this excellent, excellent, series. For those that have come in late, this book, like the previous books in this brilliant series, Wolfsong, Ravensong and this latest one Heartsong, are NOT standalones. You absolutely need to read the other books to have any idea of whats what, and who's who, who the goodies are and who the baddies are.
Anyone who's read this standout series, will attest that without the amazing backstory started off in Wolfsong, new readers will be confused about the plot and characters, and lose so much joy that only comes from such top shelf storytelling, by trying to skip books.
Truthfully, anyone whose ever read any of Klune's work will undoubtedly agree, Green Creek is such an amazing series and 1000% worth starting from scratch if you haven't yet fallen into this amazing world. And much like the rest of his fan base, I too feel as though the wait for the next book, will be interminable. August 2020 is soooo far away.
So, 3 books in, and like all great series, there's the usual trepidation when a new release is set free, all the angst and worry the latest story will be a let down... despite my full support, like most normal folks I dare say, I was wondering if the knockout brilliant momentum of Green Creek's fabulousness would continue with Robbie and Kelly's story, because at the end of book 2, we were left knowing that these two guys were meant for each other, no surprise there.
Also, as great supporting secondary characters Robbie and Kelly were just so... likeable, so not angsty, calm, supportive and perfect support cast to the amazing Ox, Joe, Gordo, Mark, Carter and the tight-knit human crew, that bringing these men into the foreground as main MC's would take a deft hand and a great plot.
Except with NO spoilers coming at all, Heartsong was NOTHING at all like I was expecting and for that very reason this installment was an unexpected rollercoaster ride that was equal parts beautifully brilliant and epically sad. Absolutely a true testament to the skill and care that is TJ Klune's writing that this book never once stumbled in the course of furthering the Green Creek series.
Book 3, Heartsong, was just so damn good, so wonderful, so sad, all thanks to Klune's deft hand at weaving such compelling, believable ( for fantasy) powerful, emotional stories. No word of a lie, Klune's masterful touch in managing so many secondary characters' again shone here and his brilliance rose another level by his ease in catapulting Robbie and Kelly into believable, lovable, heartrendingly beautiful leading men. As with the previous books, this instalment was 1st POV this time told through Robbie's wonderful unique voice, and holeymoley, Klune upped his game to lift Robbie as a front-runner powerhouse main leading man. So, so good.
Klune's unraveling of Heartsong's plot, like his previous books, was littered with extremely well described emotional highs and lows, snippets of memories, and backstory, as well as standout fabulous fight scenes and all the danger and drama, and breath-stealing surprises that we've come to expect from Klune and the Green Creek crew. While at its core, Green Creek is a goodies versus baddies theme, this series is 100% so much more as the members of the Bennett/Matherson pack muddle through the trials and tribulations of baddies wanting to hurt and destroy them as each member stumbles their way towards their HEA.
For those that know, and those that want to know, this latest release, Heartsong, was very angst driven and had me completely caught up in the unfolding drama involving the wickedly bad, Robert Livingstone and company, and the ongoing issues that surround the Bennett/Matherson pack as they cope with the ever-increasing danger of the Omegas and the emotional ride that was the coming together of Robbie and Kelly. If that wasn't enough drama and angst, and heart-squeezing feels, Klune threw in some edgy teasing snippets involving Carter and the faithful grey wolf who attached himself to Carter's side at the end of book 2. I'm not giving anymore away, you'll have to read the book.
What I will say however, now that I've read this book twice, ( simply because it was so damn good) I have no idea why I even contemplated there being any possible issue with this next instalment coming out, because TJ Klune continued to wow, and thrill, and have me a blubbering mess as I raced through each page almost biting my nails off, clean up to my elbows.
So much tension. So much drama.
So many feels. So, so good.
Honestly, I was all green, green, green, until I was blue, blue, blue, and then as the book was winding up, I was green and blue and a mixture of the two. Cracker writing. However, when I read that Brothersong ( Carter and Gavin) wasn't due out until August 2020, I fell back into blue, blue, blue. So much blue.
Heartsong, *woah* I can only say, do your self a favor and read this epic series. Book one is Wolfsong and if your not addicted to all things Matherson/Bennett by the close of the cover, I'd be powerfully surprised.
Absolutely, positively, Highly, Highly recommended reading. I'll undoubtedly stay blue, blue, blue, until next August as I faithfully wait for Brothersong. I have a feeling its going to be a huge emotional rollercoaster ride of epic feels, soulful crying jags and brilliant laugh out loud moments ( typical TJ Klune writing) I simply cannot wait. Sadly Brothersong, will likely be the conclusion to this amazing, beautiful series.
Score-wise: So many stars, if I added them all together and tried to post them, I'll likely break Amazon 's scoring system- so sadly I have to stick with 5. If you want some free advice, hurry and click this standout series, every book is hands down, no word of a lie, worth the price of buying the books. Honestly, I've never been so happy to spend money.

About the Author
When TJ Klune was eight, he picked up a pen and paper and began to write his first story (which turned out to be his own sweeping epic version of the video game Super Metroid--he didn't think the game ended very well and wanted to offer his own take on it. He never heard back from the video-game company, much to his chagrin). Now, over two decades later, the cast of characters in his head have only gotten louder. But that's okay, because he's recently become a full-time writer and can give them the time they deserve.
Since being published, TJ has won the Lambda Literary Award for Best Gay Romance, fought off three lions that threatened to attack him and his village, and was chosen by Amazon as having written one of the best GLBT books of 2011.
And one of those things isn't true.

By the end of this book I felt exhausted, again it was a great read with many emotional ups and downs but I just felt how much more can this pack go through!! I really hope the next book finishes this series off and I really hate to say that especially as Wolfsong was so beautiful - definitely my favourite of the series - but I just felt like how much more does this pack have to endure it left me exhausted.

I havw never been broken down to pieces and put back together so many times in one book before. I have cried, I have sobbed, I have wished horrible things upon the pen of TJ Klune,. And I have laughed and loved with this pack.
My heart and soul have been ripped apart and I am not the same person I was before this work of art, this series, this family, this pack. I am a better person now. I am part of this pack and they are a part of me.
I was broken. I was lost. I was howled home.
And I answered that call. I welcomed that call. I needed that call. And I will return to this pack, this territory, this Green Creek again and again.

I am so hooked on the saga of the Bennett pack. Book 3 has not disappointed and I can’t wait until August next year to complete the tale. Brilliantly written as always with TJ Klune.

This book is moving and funny and quintessential Klune. I was hesitant to read it, but it was not the story I thought it would be. I am, once again, blown away.

This series is the best - the story of the Bennet Pack just gets more epic and heartfelt with each book!!! Robbie Fontaine has always been a loner until he was welcomed into an important wolfpack. When he is confronted with contradictory memories, he must work out what is real and what is a lie. Each of the books in this series has been so full of hurt and heart, maybe this one has the most hurt. In the earlier books, Robbie is a light-hearted character, so it was amazing to see his backstory, the agony of not knowing who to trust, and the patience and love of the pack during his rehabilitation. His whole journey was engrossing but the action scenes during the showdown were brilliant. 🎧 Kirt Graves = genius ... I love his voice, expression, and pacing!

Amazing series that always leave you wanting more
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 January 2020Verified Purchase
I was lost in the beginning and started thinking that I skipped a book. However, I wasn’t lost for long as the pieces came together.
The sadness in Kelly’s eyes made me well up. His mate was so close yet so far and it truly showed how much it affected him.
Tanner, Chris, Carter and Gordo made me laugh. Their reaction to Kelly being sick and dying was hilarious - you would think that Tanner and Chris being former humans would know better, but evidently not.
Carter was completely oblivious to what was right in front of him. It was fun watching the wolf following Carter around watching him “masturbate” lol or growling at those who got too close.
The Bennett family and their beautiful pack bond slowly began to shine again. Sometimes you have to trust and have faith and the pack definitely did that where Robbie was concerned.
I eagerly look forward to the last book in this riveting series.

TJ Klune has ruined me again
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 June 2020Verified Purchase
Honestly I don’t know where to start. No other author rips my soul out, tears it apart and then puts it back together again like TJ Klune. My heart may never recover.
This series is written in a way I haven’t really come across in any other books and it makes you immerse yourself in this world completely. Each book in the series has made me bawl my eyes out at least once and this one was no exception. This book follows Robbie and Kelly and we experience the story from Robbie’s point of view. I won’t say much in case of spoilers, but I will say there are some major shocks following on from the last book. This series is a one of a kind experience and I can’t recommend it enough.

Master of stories that touch soul deep
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 October 2019Verified Purchase
Yes, Klune has done it again. He has uncanny ability to make the characters alive and very realistic, stories very deeply touching and addictive - to the point where you find it really hard to put the book down and could I, please, read another page... well let's be honest maybe two... or ten. Where you find yourself wanting some more after finishing the book, not because it's lacking, but because it's so good. Don't hesitate - just take it and read for the sake of your soul, if it's like mine taking every great story almost like food and storing the lessons hidden in it.

Epic Beautifully Crafted Emotional Book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 November 2019Verified Purchase
Another fantastic beautifully written book in the Green Creek series. You really have to read the previous 2 books before you read this one. I experienced the full gamut of emotions reading this book, confusion at first, then realisation before horror, sadness, joy, love. It’s a book about Robbie finding himself and his place in the world. Kelly was a strong quiet presence despite what happened to him, his love and resolve never wavered. TJ is a master of epic storytelling but for me his mastery of crafting emotions is second to none. I’m looking forward with some trepidation to book 4 but I’ll buy it and devour it.

This book was amazing and I think I experienced nearly every emotion while reading. Confusion, dawning horror( a true WTH moment), relief, humour, anger, sadness but SO much love.
This is not a stand alone and if you've read the first 2 books you think you know what you're in for but this is so much more.
Again I felt like I was coming home to this place and these amazing characters. This pack, this family becomes stronger with each book.
Another masterpiece from TJ Klune.
