Product Description

Despite a successful college teaching career, Noah Daniels has become depressed. He feels he’s leading a monochromatic life: love has eluded him. When he’s offered a chance to teach in London as part of an exchange program, he accepts, hoping a change of scenery will do him good. But once he’s there, his outlook on love and sexuality changes in ways he never expected.

Robert Callinan is Noah’s English counterpart in the program. The men exchange not only their jobs, but also their homes, and it is what Noah stumbles across while staying at Robert’s house that sends him on a journey of self-discovery—both mentally and physically. A journey that puts color back into his life… just not in the way he expected. When the exchange program ends, Noah has to go home, but he doesn’t know if he wants to return to the life he left behind.

This is a wonderful novel about the dangers of living without self knowledge and the explosion that occurs in your life when you discover your true nature. Lily Velden knows how to wield words as a visceral weapon or a soft caress. I read a short story before this good length novel, and was put off by the flowery, cheesy dialogue surprised when I found out a man had written it. I recommended a friend, who happens to be a gay man, read it and tell me what he thought. Likewise, he thought it had been ‘written by a woman who didn’t know men’.
I then copied various paragraphs of this novel to him and he thought it was written by a gay man. In this context it is a great compliment. This book is very sexy. It has desperate need, sexual awakening, fear from new arousal and understanding of self. It also has some quotable gems,
His cock was definitely a star. His heart and lungs were merely its life support system, his nerves its communication system, and the apex of his thighs its home address. Though I wouldn’t mind if he called my ass home away from home.
When Noah’s sexual awakening occurs he behaves like a teenager, who has just discovered the sexual pleasures out there, he is unable to put the genie back in the bottle and is aroused by men everywhere. His first attempts to assuage his permanent arousal and experiment are at a gay bath house, but it is the cache of home videos and the sexual images of someone he has never met, which have him desiring more. Because this is a story about a man in his early thirties it means every feeling and event, in his coming out, is heightened for him.
Noah’s awareness of how he has been half alive for three decades makes discovering love for the first time feel more poignant. When he finally meets the true object of his desires he has his first gay kiss,
That one kiss was the best sex I’d ever had.
This novel starts off with some descriptions, which my previously mentioned friend said rang really true. He himself has been out and proud since a very young teen, but knows men who have felt, as described by Lily Velden, when depression overcame them whilst in the closet for decades,
I was living a monochromatic, black- and- white photograph of a life where everything was a shade of tedious. I wasn’t sure how it happened, or even when it happened.
It just had.
It crept up on me, like a slow-spreading parasitic vine, gradually sapping the vibrancy from my life. One day I woke up and everything was gray, dull and lifeless.
This novel impressed me, entertained me, aroused me and gave me everything I enjoy in a believable romantic story between two men. Additionally no women had to be insulted or stereotyped to do this and I think I’ve already sold it to my friend.

HASH(0xaa9f00fc) out of 5 stars Sexy, passionate, endearing and romantic 11 May 2014
By Tams (TTC Books and more) - Published on Amazon.com

The gay version of The Holiday! Noah would be Cameron Diaz, and Robert would be Kate Winslet.
Noah Daniels and Robert Callinan share a desire to do something more with their lives. Both are college teachers, Noah in America and Robert in the UK, but they are both tired of their mundane lives, searching for something different... something more. So they swap jobs, lives and houses for 6 months.

Robert is eager to learn more about his American counterpart, studying the pictures of him scattered throughout his home and pumping Noah’s brother, Mitch, for more personal information.

Noah is fascinated with idea of Robert and upon inspection of the man’s home, he finds Robert’s secret DVD stash. Noah has always felt like there was something inside him that didn’t click, like there was something he was missing. When he sees Robert on screen having lots of sex, in various positions, with various lovers, everything finally clicks. Noah is gay, and he is enamored with the man he is watching. Noah recognizes something in Robert’s eyes though in the videos, a longing for something more, something missing.

Through lots of late night conversations over the months they are sharing each other’s lives, Noah and Robert decide to meet and take their summer break together, touring the UK. It’s on this vacation that the two become lovers. Noah is young and fresh and his crush on the slightly older sexy man soon grows into something more. Robert is slightly jaded and not quite ready to admit that Noah has wrapped himself around his heart, like a knot.

I absolutely LOVE Lily Velden. I have read all her books and I love the way she is very detailed and descriptive without being overly descriptive. You are captured by her characters and she has a way of making you ‘feel’ like you are right there with them, no matter the circumstance. They are always three dimensional, realistic and flawed in some way. That makes them human which is what makes her books so fantastic.

As you travel down the road of self discovery with Noah you will laugh, you will cry and your heart will break for him. He goes through so much and his world is turned upside down in a very short time. Robert could have easily been an unlikable character, but Velden wrote him in such a way that the reader was captivated by his charm and understanding of his hesitancy.

Sexy, passionate, endearing and romantic... even if there is a little heart break in there as well. For those folks out there that refuse to read a book without a happy ending, I’ll tell you that you will get a happy ending, just not exactly how it is delivered. This is definitely a must read, it will have a permanent slot on my kindle so I can re-read it whenever and wherever and all the time!

The best book I've read all year. Hands down. Fantastic plot, slow build, great characterizations - made me believe the whole premise of falling in love this way.

Very sweet bedtime story. A bit predictable, but well written nevertheless. A pleasant read to pass time.

HASH(0xaa9bf204) out of 5 stars Lovely Love Story 12 May 2014

Noah Daniels' life lacks color, passion and excitement. He's very successful in his career, has a great relationship with his brother, sister-in-law and nephews, but no matter how hard he tries, he just can't seem to find that special person. When Noah decides to participate in a teacher exchange program, his life is completely changed and the world as he knows it will never be the same.

Already a fan of Lily Velden's, I was anxious to read her latest work, and I was not disappointed! The relationship between Noah and his British counterpart, Robert Callinan, is not only sweet and extremely hot, but also very believable. Noah is the type of guy that you can't help but like; he's sweet, responsible and has a good head on his shoulders. Robert is the quintessential British man that could easily make an American like me swoon at the drop of a hat.

I enjoyed the fact that Noah's sexual self-discovery was gradual and didn't turn into the gay for you (gfy) trope. There's nothing wrong with gfy, but I appreciated that Noah took steps to try to feel out his new desires before even trying to start anything with Robert. Robert, on the other hand, is out, proud and oozes sensuality and confidence. He's no where near perfect, but the journey that he and Noah embark upon definitely brought a smile to my face.

I'm hoping there is a sequel because I would love to read more about Noah's fractured relationship with his family and how he deals with it going forward. All in all, this a great read that I really liked!

The author provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Lily Velden is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. I have read her first two, and find that her writing is getting better with each effort. I enjoyed this story, and the meaning behind the title was really sweet when it's revealed.

The bath house scene had me laughing out loud-- "I'm only here for the massage and sauna" t-shirt worn by the staff member was too funny for words. I agree with Noah, at least the management had a sense of humor.

I don't blame Noah at all for staying in Europe just a little longer. If I had a chance to travel around Europe for the summer--I'd have been all over it. The bonus was having the man he has been watching erotic videos of for six months accompany him.

Very satisfying read.
