Product Description

Discover the novel praised as a “nail-biting thriller” (Publishers Weekly), a “compelling web” (Kirkus Reviews), “tightly plotted character study” (RT Magazine), and a “dark, twisty tale of lurid secrets, lavish lifestyles, and devastating loss” (Lisa Gardner).

A woman who almost had it all….On the surface, Celine Gonzalez had everything a twenty-eight-year-old in Manhattan could want: a one-bedroom apartment on the Lower East Side, a job that (mostly) paid the bills, and an acceptance letter to the prestigious Hollingsworth Institute of Art, where she would finally live out her dream of becoming an antiques appraiser for a major auction house. All she had worked so hard to achieve was finally within her reach. So why would she kill herself?

A man who was supposed to be her salvation….Maggie Sparkes arrives in New York City to pack up what’s left of her best friend’s belongings after a suicide that has left everyone stunned. The police have deemed the evidence conclusive: Celine got into bed, downed a lethal cocktail of pills and vodka, and never woke up. But when Maggie discovers a scandalous photograph in a lock box hidden in Celine’s apartment, she begins asking questions. Questions about the man Celine fell in love with. The man she never told anyone about, not even Maggie. The man Celine believed would change her life.

Until he became her ruin….On the hunt for evidence that will force the police to reopen the case, Maggie uncovers more than she bargained for about Celine’s private life—and inadvertently puts herself on the radar of a killer. A killer who will stop at nothing to keep his crimes undiscovered.

I wasn't sure what to expect to be honest. I tried to read this book a couple of times but life got in the way. Third time worked a charm though and once I started... really started, I couldn't stop! I was guessing, second guessing and then slammed with the ending! I loved it... Every bit of it. There was a real old school, gumshoe feel about this story, to the point where I was seeing the story in black and white with 1950's characters. It just added to the appeal. Now what I want to know is... will there be more Maggie Sparkes books? I hope so!!

He Will Be My Ruin is a heart pounding, sitting on the edge of your seat read. The mystery and suspense will have you in knots and guessing right up to the very end. Every time you have a theory, Tucker will add another piece to the puzzle shattering that theory. While this book is unlike her previous work you will not be disappointed.

Maggie flies to NYC when she finds out her best friend since she was a child, Celine, was found dead in her apartment. It may look like suicide but something doesn't sit right with Maggie, she knows Celine isn't the kind of person to take her own life. Determined to uncover the truth Maggie is about to find out she didn't know her friend as well as she thought she did…

Maggie has the drive, resources and the money to find out what really happened to Celine. Each new secret she unfolds is like a piece to the puzzle, a life she had no idea Celine was living.
Every new detail uncovered leaves her even more convinced that Celine did not kill herself. Maggie will stop at nothing to find out the truth, regardless of the cost.

K.A Tucker delivers a flawless book filled with so much depth, emotion and intensity. The suspense kept me captivated, every chapter was like pulling off a layer diving further into uncovering the truth while still uncovering more secrets. He Will Be My Ruin was one thrilling ride I did not want to get off. While this story is different to Tucker’s previous work, if you like her writing you will love this story just as much

4.0 out of 5 stars Combines a blazing tumble of a romance with an emotionally charged murder mystery 8 June 2016
By Karielle @ Books à la Mode - Published on
Maggie's life has always been a privileged breeze, being the sole heiress to Sparkes Energy and all. Money has never been a roadblock for her because she's always had it. Her best friend from childhood on the other hand, Celine, led a different life. A life so veiled and desperate that Maggie knew nothing about until discovering her old diaries in the wake of her purported suicide.

Upon hearing the news, Maggie uproots herself from her charity work—a self-professed duty only to combat the immorality of her family's money-grubbing energy empire—and moves into Celine's Manhattan apartment to help pack up her belongings. An antiques fanatic at heart and appraiser by trade, Celine left behind pieces that must amass to a fortune, and it's Maggie's responsibility to take care of it all. It isn't until she discovers tidbits of Celine's private life and the things she did to survive in the nasty slew of the city, that Maggie's suspicions that Celine's death was not a suicide are confirmed. Celine had so much going for her, so much to look forward to, both in her professional and personal life. Immediately, Maggie points her finger in the direction of murder, and sets off to find out everything she can about Celine's secret lover—the man she claims was her ruin.

He Will Be My Ruin spins the tragedy of an unexpected death into a murder mystery that unfolds with a furor. Maggie is determined to go to any length to find out the truth about her best friend, unknowingly stepping straight into the high-risk, greed-fueled minefield that got Celine killed in the first place. K.A. Tucker knows how to tell a suspenseful story; the plot moves quickly with surprising discoveries and dark revelations peppered throughout, as Maggie enters this unfamiliar, dangerous game.

I had no trouble getting through this book, and was definitely satisfied with its unpredictable outcome and frequent red herrings. So many complicated facets of Maggie's and Celine's lives are introduced to the backdrop of the crime, so while reading, there is no knowing of what matters in the case, and what has no relevance at all. A sizzling romantic distraction muddles Maggie's focus and creates a conflict of interest, while the emotional disaster she experiences when finding out about Celine's secret life almost destroys her.

That said, I wasn't particularly affected by most of the layers of the story. The emotional tragedy, I understood, and the unraveling of Celine's murderer, I found chilling, but after I finished the book I felt like not much stuck with me. The characters are rather simple and formulaic (with the exception of the late Celine, who always finds a way to surprise the reader), and Tucker's writing style rather gratuitous with lots of superficial details. Regardless, it's an enjoyable story overall that will have you squirming in the moment as Maggie narrows down the harrowing possibilities in her crime-solving spree.

In the end, she is forced to confront the scariest reality of them all: that the one person she trusted could be the person she should most fear, and that when it comes to murder, money, and sex, nothing is really what it seems to be on the surface.

Pros: Detailed and thorough in narration // Characters are deeply explored // Suspenseful, fast-paced // Lots of factors introduced that make the mystery unpredictable and complicated // Simple and easy to navigate structurally

Cons: Writing style, while effective, is slightly amateurish // I felt like I understood the characters well, but didn't really like any of them

Verdict: He Will Be My Ruin combines a blazing tumble of a romance with an emotionally charged murder mystery. Brimming with shocking discoveries and an ominous "sleeping with the enemy" vibe, K.A. Tucker's newest novel grapples with themes of morals and guilt, despair and desperation, and the fine hazards of money and art. While I didn't find this book to be mind-blowing, I guarantee it will keep you glued to its pages until Maggie's mission is complete... if it even ends well, that is.

8 hearts: An engaging read that will be worth your while; highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Both the victim and the heroine were not sympathetic. At. All. 7 July 2016

Honestly, and don't hate me, but I was more sympathetic to the bad guys! The victim made bad choices and, while she didn't deserve to die, she inflicted a lot of pain on those who cared for her, including the killer. And Maggie, well, she was self-righteous, judgmental, and never really took responsibility for neglecting her friend as she did. She should have done everything she could for her friend that she called a sister. One wonders why she has no other friends! She stomps through life throwing her money and her status around. Her cold reaction to the death of one of the characters made me dislike her more. It's a sad book when you feel more for the bad guys than the victim and the heroine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally engrossing read 9 March 2016

I was totally engrossed with this book, the plot and the characters. This was very different from the previous book that I have read from this author, and it was a wonderful departure from her norm. I was guessing who the bad guy was the entire time. I kept going back and forth, trying to figure it out, what the motive was, why it was happening, did Celine really do it? So many things. I was intrigued and engaged from the first page to the last page. Ms. Tucker knows how to draw you into her spell and keep you there. It was a great read, a mystery/ love story. A great mix of all things and I'm very glad that I read it. It's a must read for all.

4.0 out of 5 stars He Will Be My Ruin will be a memorable read for me and I thoroughly enjoyed every page 3 February 2016

4.5 Stars

I love it when an author tries something new. Win or fail, you have to take chances in life. This business isn’t always (rarely, in fact) kind to such risks by authors. Genre hopping backfires quite often. Yet, I’m still a fan when they try. However, I can say, unequivocally, that Tucker did not fail with this risk. She may have hit the scene as a romance writer, but she excels just as easily as a suspense writer.

If you go into He Will Be My Ruin with any expectations of it being remotely like her previous titles, you’ll not get what your looking for. This is not a romance. There is some budding relations and sexual interactions but I would never classify this as romantic. Let’s just be clear about that up front.

What this is – is a murder mystery at it’s core. Maggie’s life long friend ends up dead in her New York apartment, police rule it a suicide but Maggie is less than convinced. With no hope of help from authorities, she dives into the facts and clues herself and recruits some help along the way. While digging, she realizes her friend, Celine, had a much different life than she led Maggie to believe and the secrets she held, the people she knew, led to her untimely death.

And also to the danger Maggie finders her own life in now, because there is still a killer on the loose.

From the beginning of this tale there were two fairly clear suspects for me and I bounced back and forth between them often. I also had moments when I thought side characters were playing a bigger part in the backstory than the story suggested – I played with several scenarios in my head. Hoping some would flesh out and hoping others wouldn’t. All of that is what makes a great suspense story for me. If I have it all figured out too early on, I won’t want to continue reading. This wasn’t the case here, Tucker kept my mind working.

While I don’t know that this is going to be as explosive of a seller as say, Gone Girl or The Girl on the Train, I can most definitely see it finding a loving home with those who gravitate to those type of titles. It’s got a lot of what those big selling Mystery / Suspense books have. I think the only thing that really lacked for me was a bit of character development, for a couple of the main players. I think that would have cemented my interest in them all the more. However, even without that, He Will Be My Ruin will be a memorable read for me and I thoroughly enjoyed every page.

5.0 out of 5 stars Utterly Entertaining 29 February 2016

Wow. Just wow. This blew me away. KA never fails to deliver a phenomenal story with an easiness to her words. She paints such beautiful images - it's more like watching the story unfold than reading. I'll admit, the story was slow to start. If not for my love of all things KA Tucker, I may have had a hard time pushing through the first 20% or so. But, lord, did it pick up! And once it did, I was fully invested to the story and what was going on. Without spoilers, I can tell you there was more than one moment that I had a sense of pride at having figured out the plot, only to have that rug ruthlessly pulled out from under me. When you think you have it all figured out, you don't. And then some. Definitely a must read for anyone who loves a well-told story.
