This is a 4.5 star read.
I luuuurrve my demonic possession books and movies!! And this novel was right up my street and exactly what I needed.
I did get a bit confused between the past and present chapters and the two characters Eddie and Derek but that's totally my fault as I was practically speed reading in my enthusiasm to immerse myself in the story. Once I slowed myself down and reread a few chapters it all made sense.
The book starts out with the horrifying death of Eddie's young sister and the first of his comas. We follow Eddie's life from childhood, to his teen years to his despairing young adulthood where he commits suicide and has his second, longer coma. At the same time we start to follow Derek's story of a PhD student and his thesis of mental health and the link to Psychic Phenomenon. He ends up with his own University Demonology Department and starts to investigate cases. While despairing of ever finding any real cases to study he comes across Eddie and his bizarre sleepwalking episodes.
Fascinating, sorrowful, anxiety driven and frightening, we are given a peek at Eddie's battle over true evil and the development of his special ability. A stunning start to a new horror/fantasy series for me, I have just joined the author's newsletter so I don't lose the rest of the series in my huge TBR pile.
