This book is about saving lives - probably my own. It's a must read, and not just for those with a known heart condition but for anybody with a heart - it's that important.
In this easy to read and detailed book Dr Bishop clearly articulates the importance of being aware of ones own 'heart health' and how the easiest and most accurate way to do this is by undergoing painless CT imaging. This process will clearly show the current health of the coronary arteries, allowing any necessary treatment to be prescribed BEFORE an adverse medical event occurs. A more accurate diagnosis = a better prognosis, this is good primary prevention.
Dr Bishop has written a logical, step-by-step explanation of the need for coronary CT scanning to be more commonplace. He writes of what the process is, how it fits in with other diagnostic practices, explains very clearly the processes of the heart and coronary arterial system and what can go wrong and why. He gives case studies, statistics as well as clear explanations as to why drugs such as statins and aspirin may be required as well as describing the more invasive approaches of coronary angioplasty and stenting.
I am an active 61 year old, and my own journey to Dr Bishop came after developing a pain in my lower calf muscle and being diagnosed by a vascular surgeon with Peripheral Arterial Disease - a 70% blockage in my right femoral artery below the groin. This diagnosis shocked me and led me to wonder about the health of the rest of my arterial tree. I am lucky enough to live in the same city as Dr Bishop and so arranged tests with him which revealed that I am at high risk of a future, adverse coronary event - I do have a coronary plaque problem and I am now on a statin, aspirin and a blood pressure lowering medication.
I can't thank the good doctor enough - it was me starting to read this book that led me to seeing my doctor and asking for a referral to Dr Bishop's practice.
I am fit and healthy for my age, exercise, do yoga, notice no symptoms in relation to my heart and generally feel strong and fine, yet, lurking under the surface was a potential heart attack - a very sobering discovery. Read this book, make some enquiries - it could save your life.
