I don't think I've ever read one word from Tim Soutphommasane with which I could disagree. His measured insights, his studies, his lived experiences and his compassion for all those who suffer the slings and arrows of hateful commentary - and worse - match my own experiences and observations from an Anglo-OZ identity.
This book is timely and should be studied by everyone concerned with public policy and the protection of that precious thing we call fairness - and/or of what we think of as democracy - even if not really practised here anymore! That's what Tim is telling us on one level - how easy it is to slip from tolerating hateful speech and ideas to finding our nation quite literally sliding into fascism - it's happened elsewhere - no reason to think it won't happen here aided by right-wing shock jocks and a media owned by a noted right-wing foreigner.
