Hard to Find – Book One – The Hard Trilogy – Briana Michaels
Holy Hell Hounds! My level of expectancy combined with the anxious anticipation as I awaited the release of this next trilogy in the Hell Hounds Harem series, had my senses in overdrive as I began reading this book. I can tell you right now – I was ill prepared for the wild abundance of fierceness and loyalty, coupled with a total selflessness portrayed by the characters within these pages, especially the female lead. Bravo Briana Michaels! You have far exceeded my expectation and delivered, in just this first instalment, a telling the likes of which I am sure will carry through to the end of book three in this fascinating and fabulous world that you have created within the realm of the supernatural.
Let’s take a look at our main players:
Tilly – Our female human lead. Doomed to die before her twenty eighth year because of the terrible family curse that hangs over her head. Despite her many attempts to break the curse (which took her mother while Tilly was still a tender age) and free herself and her younger sister from their terrible shared fate, Tilly feels her time is running out. She is twenty-seven years and two months old.
Val – He is this pack’s Alpha and the most solid and gentle soul you could ever hope to encounter in a Hell Hound. He has enough years under his belt (centuries in fact) to be wise and authoritative yet command enough compassion and empathy to seek truth and truce whenever and wherever it is possible. He wears the mantle of protection for his pack and Tilly like a cloak around his shoulders. Never faltering at the heavy burden that must surely weigh him down like an anchor holding a ship to the ocean floor.
Bishop – Our Beta in the pack. Oh, how my heart breaks at his efforts to free himself of the terrible price his sanity has paid at the cruel blows that fate has dealt him. First at his early death in a manner so disturbing that it haunts his second life as a Hell Hound. The next crushing blow to his mind came with being possessed by the rotted spirits of the malanum, the very creatures that all Hell Hounds were created to hunt and send back to Hell. The time Bishop lost while under their possession has him reeling with uncertainty and fractured his memories. Thoughts of what he may have done to his missing two pack members, twins Drake and Sebastian, slide like a blade through his psyche, keeping him off balance and functioning at less than optimal levels for a Hell Hound.
Drake and Sebastian – We only get snatches of them throughout this book. However, we are given a goodly helping towards the end when their imminent discovery by their Alpha and Beta, along with Tilly draws us in to the depths of the Paris catacombs.
The strong sense of protection that runs through a Hell Hound is the most prominent take away feeling I get from this story so far. The legacy of Sara’s pack from the first series, bleeds into this story in such a natural and effortless way that you can easily tell the hounds share a comradeship that goes beyond any human emotions. They are quite simply, ferocious in their love and commitment to each other and this theme runs through the entire storyline.
There are some very gruesome torture scenes and not a small amount of sensual anticipation making this book a definite 18+ read.
I am off to read book two, Hard to Love! I gave this Five Fabulous Stars!
