I first read this book 8 years ago, when I was really struggling with depression. The ideas I found in its pages really changed my life. I have since trained in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and now use those ideas every day both in my own life and in my work with clients. Russ has a really engaging way of explaining the concepts and giving practical advice for applying them to your life. I come back to this book and re-read it every few years, and always find value in it. Highly recommended!

Most self-help books are based on one human's personal experience and story, so there's no real evidence that their techniques apply to the masses. The Happiness Trap offers a general researched approach to therapy and mindfulness called ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy).
Russ Harris has written a book that talks about thoughts and feelings in an interesting and fun way. The chapters are short and focused, contain personal examples of patients' experiences, and include quick activities to practice what has just been preached. There are quite a few breathing and awareness exercises, and lessons on how a lot of thoughts are just stories that we tell ourselves, of which several are malignant. The book is consistently prompting for action, which is excellent.
I recommend this book to everyone. We all have emotions, both positive and negative (though they shouldn't be thought as such). They need the time and cognitive space to be fully felt and understood. Only then can we stop fighting our thoughts and feelings, and discern whether they are actually useful or simply trifling.

This book is great. Except very very very long long long winded. Omg it couldve been half the book, which is why a condensed book has been made available. This newer book i hope to get. Russ goes on and on- then justifies himself for repeating paragraph after paragraph all through the book. It is a good book and very handy. BUT tooooooo long and tooooo often even several paragraphs at a time are just over and over. Russ apologises for this but, there again, another word for word bit. It would have to be the longest book i think ive read, and im still reading it. Its been months- "here we go again". So i have skipped many pieces, Russ's intentions were good, but it wouldve been half a book. Did i say long winded?

When my psychologist recommended this book to me I thought that it would be one of those self help books that sound great but don’t seem to fit quite right. But this book blew me away. The concepts are simple and the exercises are effective. Already I am experiencing the benefits of practicing the techniques this book teaches. I really felt like I connected with the author of this book, he seemed like a real person having a conversation with you. I want to buy a copy of this book for everyone I know!! I strongly recommend you read this book for any reason!

A great read, easy to follow, really good examples, and it helps so, so much. Watch some Russ Harris videos before reading to get an idea of how he presents, will help with the visualising as he is very energetic in his presentation.
Really helps to read, do, practice, each chapter/section one week at a time. Otherwise the skills just get lost in the mush.

Excellent book with lots of practical exercises. Although some find the style condescending, I found the text to be clearly written and easily digestible. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants an insight to how to manage their feelings.

Russ Harris' book has taught me so much about myself and given me a set of tool to face they day to day struggles of life. After the breakdown of my relationship, I never thought I'd be able to see the light of day again. This book has been incredible. It's not written in a way to get through quickly and fine the answers. Take your time and work though the stages of ACT.

I have read many self help books and this by far was the most effective in helping me take action and actually make changes in my life.
Most self help books try to help you eliminate negative thoughts and feelings. This book didn’t. And that made all the difference.
