...... ............. ...... ..... .... ..... . . . . . . .
but this one disappointed unfortunately. I don't know why Elinor didn't
toss her husband Ted out after going through all the medical procedures
to get pregnant, he obviously wouldn't consider adopting, and he has an affair. He obviously wanted to be with Gina and her poor pathetic son Toby. I
don't know why Roger, the house cleaner, even entered into all this. The
fiasco at the Mall was really bizarre and the ending kind of left you
hanging, did Elinor go off to Ireland and eventually adopt a child and did
Gina, Ted and Toby live happily ever after??I was hoping for better.
I found each of the characters in Happiness Sold Separately sympathetic, even when initially I didn't believe I would. For instance, given Gina's position as "the other woman" I was ready to dislike her, but found she was a much more complicated and sensitive person than I expected.
Winston presents the issue of infertility very well here and I discovered it was a much more complex situation than I knew. I think parts of this book, too, will continue to come back to me, though I didn't find it as moving or engaging as Good Grief.
Happiness Sold Separately gets a rating of 3 1/2 from me.
