I am extremely impressed with this workbook. What I like is the reference to the garden patch which is relative to my home-based preschool as we cultivate and care for fruit and vegetable garden as well as flowers! I am using this with my older aged preschoolers to practice their writing skills. It is engaging...and is an exceptional companion to my early literacy program where the children are learning their letters, phonemic awareness, and recognizing that print (letters) form words and words have meanings. When children grasp this alphabetic principle...the world of reading books is exciting for them...and to practice writing those letters creates a feeling of accomplishment for them! I have a workbook for each of my children and have them place a laminated clear page over each workbook page (attached with mini clothes pins ) and my kiddos can write and wipe off and use over.

Fun and creative way to learn handwriting

This book teaches your child to write using a fun handwriting patch theme as if the kids are growing a garden. Like drawing a line for grass and then they add more types of strokes to create different letters. This book kept my child's interest and she enjoyed bringing it out to work on her handwriting.
This was a great addition to our homeschool.

A Hit With My Son

My son already knew how to form his letters but he needed help slowing down to make them legible. Definitely a life saver. Now waiting to see if they will create a cursive version.

Fun way to learn writing

Bought it as a gift. It looks like a fun way for a child to learn writing and drawing. Especially for kids that aren't natural writers or artists.

Your kid may want to do this more than library craft time. Maybe.

"Do you want to do your Handwriting Patch now, or go do a library craft?" "Handwriting Patch!"....yes that conversation actually happened one day. My daughter was never that much into learning handwriting, even when I brought out the sand trays, the salt trays, the sugar trays, the play dough, the dry erase markers, the chalk boards, the chalk markers, the .... you get the point, we tried it all. My preschooler would try all these things but lose interest quickly when I tried to give it structure (for example, she loved to just draw in the sand trays which is great for fine motor too and of course I let her do that, but if I tried to show her how to draw anything like a letter she would not show interest in following my lead). Now I was never too worried because she was quite young and we did plenty of other fine motor activities, but as she approached 4 I decided to buy this book just to see if she liked it, because I liked the idea of actually giving names to lines and strokes (make grass, make an airplane, etc) and to the "writing roadway" itself (star line, etc). This improved communication so much, it became much easier to describe what I was trying to get her to write (those little poems or songs you can use to learn to write all the letters never worked for my preschooler). And the best is, my preschooler just thinks it is super fun! The pictures to color and the "writing patch" to draw in all make it so fun for her. We are still working on the book but so far she still loves it. Literally the only things I can think of that could maybe be improved upon are: I wish it was top bound (for my lefty), some color to the pages would be nice just to catch the eye, I find myself thinking too hard about which way is rain and which way is shooting star, and the lower case "t" trace (the large one with the dots for tracing with your finger) has the "airplane" way too low. Other than that, this product has gotten my preschooler to ask for handwriting, to do writing all on her own, and I have seen definite improvement in her writing since starting this book. I highly recommend it, and am thankful for this unique book!!
